Let's take a look at a GIF of a key play from each quarter of the Panthers 20-14 victory over the Bucs. I've selected plays you won't see on Sportscenter but they were still vital to the outcome of the game.

The Panthers open the scoring in the first quarter with a scoring pass to TE Greg Olsen. Earlier in the drive the Panthers faced 3rd and 7 and QB Derek Anderson went to his new found shiny toy for 22 yards and a 1st down:

He had high and low coverage but his size makes it an easy throw and catch. The catch put the Panthers in the Bucs side of the field and they shortly went ahead 7-0.

With only :42 left in the 2nd quarter, the Panthers faced 2nd and 9 from the TB 25. Anderson hits Cotchery with a short pass and from there it's nothing but tough YAC:

Cotchery was invisible for the preseason but in his four catches against the Bucs I see why he is a great addition to the Panthers WR corp and it's not what I was expecting. He fights for those extra yards after the catch and is not easy to bring down. I'm very encouraged by what I saw from Cotchery.

With 8:53 left in the 3rd quarter and Bucs driving towards the Panther red zone the leader of the defense unveils what he has been working on this offseason...the Mike blitz!

Keek goes beast Mode! I hope to see more of the Mike blitz this season.

Finally with 13:24 in the 4th quarter I selected a play from the third phase of the game:

After making the first two guys miss with a nice spin move he then gets a great block from Josh Norman that opens up the sideline and allows him to tack on another 15 yards. Though it only ended up being a 23 yard return we will take those all day long. We may have found us a punt returner Panther fans! Oh and a hat tip to Josh Norman...it's the little things that will keep you on the roster.

I hope you enjoyed the GIFs I picked out for you!

Every great season needs a first step. We just saw it.

The Carolina Panthers weren't at half-strength or third-strength, or any other fraction. They were an able body without a heart, a shell of potential and promise without the spark of life that makes a team feel alive. This is the part where we normally talk about why it was a moral victory or try to justify a loss, but we're not doing that this morning. No, the Panthers won, they're 1-0 and this is only the beginning.

This is the part where we make bold predictions, right? Sweeping over simplifications trying to distill three hours of football into an easily digestible nugget that makes us all believe. It's here where we're supposed to predict a guaranteed playoff berth or Super Bowl glory, but we can't -- not yet. It's okay though, because the Panthers passed their biggest test out of the gate.

For a while things were scary, particularly in the second half. A team held aloft by a valiant quarterback performance and stunning defense felt listless when the re-energized Bucs returned from halftime. It was almost as if the Panthers surprised themselves, that behind the bravado and belief shown on a public mask, there was a face behind it that never really believed they could do it without Cam Newton -- but they did, and the players on Sunday deserve to be celebrated.

Over my years of watching sports I've followed a great number of teams across a variety of disciplines. Never have I seen a team respond to pressure quite like the Carolina Panthers. It's uncanny. It feels like they'll forever be the team that occasionally botches an easy win, but when they're backed into a corner it's hard to pick a more deadly team in the NFL. Make no mistake, there was a lot going against them on Sunday. Pulling Cam out of a lineup is like removing a piston from an engine. Against the Buccaneers the Panthers weren't perfect, but the players were on that field for something bigger, something with a purpose.

That's why we should all get excited for this season.

What I liked

Kelvin Benjamin, Extremely Optimistic

Well, this is a first. In my five years of writing this series I've never had a rookie achieve this category in three preseason games and Week 1 of the regular season. At this point I hope everyone has checked their pre-draft egos and are ready to embrace the Panthers new No.1 receiver.

Let's not pretend it was some sort of sage wisdom from those who liked him pre-draft, instead lets give the pats on the back where they belong: To Benjamin and the Panthers. The former for working incredibly hard to become a more sure-handed receiver this offseason, the latter because the team has put him in positions where he can win.

We talked about size being an innate factor that would let Benjamin win, and we saw that on Sunday. His touchdown catch wasn't an amazing route or a result of a crafty feint, it was because a receiver of Benjamin's size can out-muscle defensive backs who try and play him physically. Pair that with outstanding gusto in the blocking game and he's been everything we hoped for.

Luke Kuechly, Extremely Optimistic

I've seen Luke Kuechly play, I watched the Panthers draft him, heck I've even interviewed him. I'm still not 100 percent sure he's not a figment of my imagination. The dude basically does nothing wrong on the football field.

Sure there was a first half gaffe that resulted in a big gain when he misread a pass play, but outside of that he was other worldly. Nine tackles, one sack and a critical game-winning forced fumble. It's the kind of thing you hope a player will do once a season, yet Luke finds a way to turn these performances in every single week.

Kuechly is now 15th in tackles in Panthers history, and he's one game into his third season. Let that sink in. It took 20 years for these records to be set, and he's breaking them in a handful. At this rate he'll be the team's all-time leading tackler at the end of 2015.

That's ungodly.

Derek Anderson, Extremely Optimistic

Every group of friends has the one guy you give endless shit to. Deep down you love him, but you still tease him ceaselessly about stuff he's done in the past or gleefully point out his foibles to the extent where you're sure one day he'll snap. This is Derek Anderson to Panthers fans.

We'll never stop referencing his "I take this serious" post-game rant from 2010, sure we make fun of him trying to jump as high as Cam when they celebrate and his Twitter account is an endless source of entertainment, but when shit goes down he's there -- possibly holding a gun at the best time. Okay, so that was a little Stand By Me-ish, but the point remains.

Having a reliable backup quarterback is something the Panthers have lacked for a long time. Endlessly vacillating between "starter or bust" we've become conditioned to thinking all is lost when the No.1 goes down. Not anymore. Anderson was graceful under pressure, did exactly what it took to win and above all else was reliable. Heck, the dude completed 70 percent of his passes at a decent clip of 6.76 YPA. Not Cam levels, but he was really freaking good.

Anderson could start for a handful of teams right now and be an upgrade, but you can't have him. He's our friend.

Other notables

Extremely Optimistic: Greg Olsen, DeAngelo Williams, Antoine Cason, Brad Nortman, Greg Hardy, Bene Benwikere, Offensive Line.

Somewhat Optimistic: Charles Johnson, Kawann Short, Dwan Edwards

What I didn't like

I could sit here and pick apart some of the less-than-desirable moments and come up with a handful of players, but the fact is that the Panthers played really well yesterday. The Buccaneers don't have a huge amount of talent and they're building under Lovie Smith, but they're far from an easy out.

If there's one bone I could pick it would be that I'd like to see more aggressiveness from the coaching staff. It felt like all three phases fell into a bit of a rut following the needlessly passive end to the first half. Ron Rivera needed to have his offense go for the throat at halftime instead of settling for a field goal. This lack of aggression led to a malaise that hovered over much of the second half and could have resulted in a loss if not for some late-game heroics.

The Panthers played so well on Sunday that they could have put Tampa Bay away in the third quarter, instead they let them stick around. A little more urgency would have worked wonders.

What's next?

Bring on the Lions. Cam Newton should be fully healed and I can't wait to see him back in action. We still love you DA.

The Carolina Panthers utterly dominated their division rivals before letting them creep back into the game. A third turnover forced by Luke Kuechly seals the win, 20-14.

The buzz was definitely back this week.

But it wasn’t the Charlotte Hornets we were talking about. It was the status of Cam Newton.

With limited mobility and the fear of re-injuring his ribs, Cam Newton sat out the 2014 NFL season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The summary

Have no fear, backup quarterback Derek Anderson is here.

Anderson led an efficient, methodical, ball control offense to a dominating first win of the season, 20-14. Anderson was 24-34, for 230 yards and 2 touchdowns, one to Greg Olsen, and the other rookie Kelvin Benjamin. He was only inaccurate on two throws on my count, and played tremendous in the absence of Newton.

Benjamin broke out in his own way as well, hauling a whopping 6 receptions for 92 yards. His touchdown reception was a beauty, as he carried his defender, fought through a pass interference penalty, and wrestled the ball away in the end zone for the score.

As for the defense? Business as usual.

Other than a gift touchdown after a bogus roughing the passer penalty on safety Thomas DeCoud, the Panthers defense held strong all game. The pass rush was unrelenting, the run game stifled, and every hit was bone-crushing. By my count, four Buccaneers left the game with injury, none on a dirty hit.

They were back to their ball-hawking ways of yester-year, notching two turnovers on interceptions by cornerback Antoine Cason and safety Roman Harper, and forced fumble by Kuechly.

Kuechly was my MVP, having a hand on two of the turnovers (he tipped the interception to Cason), collecting (only) 7 tackles, and one crushing sack. This from a guy that also quarterbacks the defense? I’m in awe.

Even head coach Riverboat Ron Rivera made a cameo. In the second quarter, Rivera decided to go for it on fourth down in the red zone in the second quarter. Anderson converted on a QB sneak, and led to a touchdown to Olsen two plays later.

Overall, this was an incredible, yet, not-surprising win for the 2014 Carolina Panthers. They won in all facets of the game, and could not find much to complain about. Not even the offensive line!

The turning point

The Panthers had this game on cruise control for 3 quarters, well on their way for a laughable win. Two touchdowns later, and the Buccaneers with the ball with under 2 minutes left, the game still hung in the balance. And all the late game collapse memories just kept rushing back.

Kuechly would have none of it.

On a dumpoff to Buccaneers running back Bobby Rainey, Kuechly punished the ball carrier, forcing a fumble that rookie Bene Benwikere would recover. Kicker Graham Gano would then sail one through the uprights, and the rest (and the game) was history.

The Good: Take your pick. Anderson in the "understudy" role leading an efficient offense. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin catching everything in sight and creating a highlight touchdown. Reliable Greg Olsen giving Anderson a safety valve and leading the team with 8 receptions. The front 11 (as I like to call it) not giving an inch for 3 quarters.

Save for a last gasp effort by the Bucs, Panthers fans have plenty to smile about. It was good. It was all good.

The Bad: One could be nitpicky about the offensive line or the secondary. But I’ll reserve all my judgement to the conservative play-calling of offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

I have always been torn on him; I hate his un-inspiring, boring, predictable play calls, yet the Panthers still win. They control the ball, eat lots of clock, and let the defense do their job.

But he might have cost them the game.

At the end of the first half, Anderson and the Panthers offense were driving, gaining yards in bunches. With 30 seconds left to go and in the Tampa Bay red zone, Shula decided to run the clock, run Tolbert for a draw, and take the field goal. It did not come back to hurt them, but it sure was on Panthers fans’ minds when the Bucs were driving at the end of the game.

I am all for ball control and winning the game by winning the clock, but some of his play calls really are head-scratchers. He called five screen passes on my count, and none of them worked.

It is much too early to throw him under the bus, but it something to monitor as the season goes on. His offense may be good enough to get the Panthers to a playoff game, but not enough to win one.

Panthers Offensive MVP: I’m going to be a softie and give a tie to Anderson and Benjamin. Anderson filled in admirably for Newton, even causing a QB controversy in some fans’ minds. I was not surprised that he did well, but mildly surprised that he shredded Tampa Bay with its new "Lovie" defense. He could not have done it without Benjamin, he caught everything his way and moved the chains. He looked unguardable today.

Panthers Defensive MVP: You could give it to the defensive line, but I will give to the big playmaker today, Luke Kuechly. Caused an interception. Force a fumbled. Sacked the quarterback on a blitz. On a day with minimal big plays, he was in on the majority of them.

Other Panthers Who Starred: DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart (even though the stats don’t show it), the offensive line, Charles Johnson, Star Lotulelei, Greg Hardy, Thomas Davis, Bene Benwikere, Antoine Cason, Kawann Short, Roman Harper, Thomas DeCoud, Brad Nortman

Panthers Who Struggled: Maybe it just looked like it to me (I’ll have to watch the tape), but it looked like AJ Klein was out of position on a couple tackles. He pinched inside on the 54 yard fullback run play. Charles Godfrey also reacted late on the first Tampa Bay touchdown pass. But I’m being nitpcky.

Notable injuries: None as of the time of this writing.

The Panthers carried a 10-0 lead into the locker room. It's a hot and sweaty one but I do like the way this one is going.

How about Derek Anderson! He's 17/22 for 159 yds 1 TD. That's a good half right there. The defense is playing lights out yet again. Let's keep it going Panthers!

This certainly isn't the start to the season we envisioned.

The Carolina Panthers are definitely playing the Buccaneers at 4:25 pm today, whether Cam Newton is a part of the team is another story.

Head coach Ron Rivera could decide to rest Newton for the Panthers Week 1 game following a rib injury he sustained in the third week of preseason. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that Cam wants to play, but Rivera has not made a determination. Choosing to sit Newton would greatly impact Carolina's chances to start 1-0, with Derek Anderson proving to be a reliable backup, but certainly hampering huge parts of the Panthers' playbook which center around Newton's running ability.

Rivera is known for his straightforward no-nonsense approach to injuries and tough decisions, but there remains a chance this is all gamesmanship to throw Tampa Bay off its game prior to kickoff. It's a tactic we've seen from other teams in the past and it's had varying degrees of success. Switching quarterbacks last-second can throw off game day preparations, forcing the opposing defense to study two players and be prepared for what both bring to the table.

It's likely the Buccaneers already prepared for both Newton and Anderson, purely by virtue of Cam's status being uncertain, even before this latest news. It would be great to see Cam out there Week 1 because he gives Carolina the best chance to win, but if the risk is losing him long-term by forcing Newton to play early, then I'd rather see the Panthers start 0-1.

The Panthers will open the 2014 season on the road as they try to sink the Bucs and get a head start on repeating as NFC South champions.

The regular season is finally here, and the Panthers will hit the road to open their 2014 campaign against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL on Sunday, September 7 at 4:25 p.m. EDT.

Below you will find all the information you need to be able to watch the game live, stream it online, listen to it on the radio or catch a replay of it at a later date. Whatever your personal needs are for this game, we've got you covered (other than buying you a ticket, of course).

Live Television

The game will be broadcast on FOX in the Panthers and Buccaneers television markets. Chris Myers and Ronde Barber will handle the play-by-play duties, and Jennifer Hale will be the sideline reporter.

Weather

The weather could be a factor in this game, especially if Tampa is hit with a scattered thunderstorm as predicted. The current forecast calls for a low of 76° and a high of 89° with 8 mph SSW winds with 40% chance of precipitation. However, the weather is always subject to change, so to keep up to date with the conditions before you make your way to the stadium you can follow the weather forecast here.

Uniforms

The Panthers will wear their alternate blue jerseys for this game.

Prediction

This game should be a closely matched contest between two teams who have something to prove. The Panthers are looking to show that 2013 was not a fluke, and the Bucs are hoping to prove they made the right decision by hiring Lovie Smith to be their new head coach. We can also factor in that division games are always tough no matter how they look on paper, so you should expect this to be a hard fought battle. With that being said, I think the Panthers will find a way to squeak out a victory.
