The Panthers front office is busy throughout the season with transactions and roster moves. Here are the transactions that have taken place so far this week:
12/06 - Signed WR Cam Sims and WR Jalen Camp to the practice squad
Cam Sims brings an interesting pedigree to the practice squad. The 6-foot-5, 214-pound receiver was a reserve during his four-year college career at Alabama. He was an undrafted free agent in 2018 and signed with Washington but suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 of his rookie season. In 2019 he had just two receptions for 29 yards. The next year Sims had a career-high 32 receptions for 477 yards and followed that up in 2021 with 15 receptions for 211 yards. Last year he had just eight receptions for 89 yards with the Commanders. Given his physical size and relatively decent NFL experience, he’s worth a look on the practice squad.
Jalen Camp had just 808 receiving yards in four years at Georgia Tech but the Jacksonville Jaguars saw enough in him to select him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. However, the Jags released him before the beginning of his rookie season. Camp signed with the Houston Texans shortly after his release in Jacksonville and over the last two seasons appeared in five games with one reception for seven yards.
12/05 - Signed OL Justin McCray to the active roster. Signed QB Jake Luton to the active roster. Released WR Matt Landers and OLB Jordan Thomas from the practice squad
Justin McCrary, a seven-year veteran, had played sparingly in two games for the Panthers this season before starting last week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing all 74 offensive snaps.
Jake Luton has been signed and released at least six times by the Panthers this year and has not appeared in an NFL game since 2020. The quarterback is now back on the active roster.
Neither Matt Landers nor Jordan Thomas had appeared in a game in Carolina this year before their releases from the practice squad.
12/04 - Waived G Brett Toth
Brett Toth appeared in three games with the Panthers this season, filling in at both guard spots. He started in Week 12 against the Tennessee Titans and played 100% of the team’s offensive snaps that week. He appeared in two other games this year playing a total of four special teams snaps across those two contests.
