Playoff Odds and Predictions

Happy Victory Monday Panther fans!

Before Sunday, the Carolina Panthers had a 9% chance of winning the division, and it has since gone up to 32%, per fivethirtyeight.com.

I didn't believe it, but it's true: if the Panthers win out the next 4 games, the NFC South is theirs. The most relevant game is against The Bucs on New Years day, which is all too ironic. However, nothing is ever that easy. So I messed with the matchups to get a better idea of what is needed in the coming weeks.

If the Panthers beat the Steelers, Lions, and the Saints, but lose to the Bucs, then the Panthers would need the Bucs to lose to the Bengals, Cardinals, and the Falcons. Both are possible and makes for excellent entertainment.

As for the odds:

Week 15: Panthers rise up to ~47% if Panthers beat the Steelers and the Bucs lose to the Bengals. The odds don't waver if the Falcons beat the Saints, but still, would be nice to pull away from the rest of the division.

Obviously, the odds change drastically as the weeks roll on, but the Panthers can technically lose to the Steelers and Lions as long as the Panthers beat the Bucs and Saints, the Bucs lose at least 3 of the next 4 (one of them being an L to the Panthers) and the Falcons lose at least 2 of the next 4. If 3 of 4 NFC South teams end at 7-10, then the Panthers head to the playoffs.

My prediction: Panthers beat the Steelers, lose to the Lions, and their last 2 games get elevated to afternoon games to hold everyone in suspense. Keep Pounding and Protect the Bank the next 2 weekends.
