The Panthers are trimming their roster to the league mandated 53-player limit before today’s 4 p.m. ET deadline and have made 13 cuts so far this morning.
Panthers' 13 early cuts:
— Joe Person (@josephperson) August 31, 2021
QB Will Grier
LB Josh Bynes
WR Omar Bayless
RB Spencer Brown
DL Frank Herron
OL Mike Horton
DB Jalen Julius
WR Keith Kirkwood
OLB Christian Miller
OL Aaron Monteiro
WR C.J. Saunders
TE Stephen Sullivan
OL Sam Tecklenburg
There are several surprises on this list, notably quarterback Will Grier and edge rusher Christian Miller, who both had decent-to-good showings during camp and the preseason and figured to be in the team’s plans for 2021. Miller’s fate was probably sealed when the Panthers traded a 2022 sixth round pick to the Bills for defensive end Darryl Johnson yesterday, while Grier is likely the victim of a roster philosophy that values having two quarterbacks instead of three to allow for more depth elsewhere on the roster.
Several of these players would be candidates to return to the Panthers as part of the practice squad if they clear waivers. Sam Tecklenburg, C.J. Saunders, Spencer Brown and Aaron Monteiro immediately stand out as guys the team likes and would potentially want to keep around if they aren’t picked up by other teams.
