We’re only 78 days away from the start of the Panthers’ 2021 season, so that means today’s countdown piece is dedicated to No. 78 on the Panthers’ roster — offensive tackle Trent Scott.
Scott was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Grambling State following the 2018 NFL Draft. He started on the practice squad, but the Bolts promoted him to the active roster just two weeks later. He only played in nine games, including one start, but the Chargers saw enough in him to sign him to a one-year deal. That year, he played in all 16 games for Los Angeles, including nine starts. In September of last year, he was waived by the Chargers and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Panthers, who were desperate for some tackle depth. Despite a brief stint on the COVID/Reserve list last year, Scott tallied 14 games for the Panthers, even starting four games at left tackle. He ended the season on injured reserve after a shoulder injury late in the year.
The Panthers liked what they saw in Scott to sign him to a one-year deal back in February. Assuming he is fully healthy, Scott provides a nice depth piece on the offensive line and brings the versatility to play guard (like he did early on with the Chargers) or tackle. We can probably go ahead and pencil him in as one of the backup tackles, though he may even challenge for the starting spot opposite Taylor Moton. He’ll have to beat out Cameron Irving and Brady Christensen if he wants to start, but he has the advantage of familiarity with the coaching staff.
