The Panthers have been itching to make a move at the quarterback position since they buried their disappointing 2020 season. After much speculation over a variety of rookie and veteran players, they have finally made that move. They are trading a small package of picks for Sam Darnold.

Darnold was made the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the New York Jets. His career has been largely disappointing thus far, but there are hopes around the NFL that the disappointment may be largely due to his previous coaching staffs and that a new scene, now Charlotte, may bring about a revival of his career.

The Panthers are trading a sixth round pick from 2021 as well as second and fourth round picks in 2022 to the Jets for Darnold.

He has started 38 games for the Jets, going 13-25 while completing 59.8% of his passes for 8097 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions. We’ll have more analysis on this move in the coming days, but suffice it to say that this is the definition of a low cost, high upside move for the Carolina Panthers.
