Carolina Panthers Pros and Cons

Pro:

DJ Moore, CMC, and Cam Newton can be a dangerous trio in the NFL. Clearly the connection from 2018 is still there, especially with only a week and a half of practice. Of the 297 total yards, the panthers had, this trio accounted for 215 of those yards, between rushing and catching. That's a whooping 72% for those with a calculator. Even with that staggering number, Cam was able to spread the ball and looked different directions. However...

Con:

The play calling is a joke. The Washington fans behind me called the first 3 plays to CMC. Yes, he makes the team better, but at the cost of the opponent knowing what the panthers are about to run. I also don't understand why Brady didn't even let Cam attempt a pass more than 30 yards downfield today, but did against the Cardinals. The RPO's also took a moment to catch up later in the game.

Pro:

The stadium was packed more today than it has been all season. Cam (presumably) brought the people, which definitely perked up the team. Multiple times both teams were struggling to hear on 2nd and 3rd down, and definitely on 4th down. However...

Con:

The 3rd and 4th down conversions were better for Washington (especially 4th downs) and too little for the Panthers. Overall for 3rd and 4th downs converted, Washington was 8 for 15 while the Panthers were 3 for 12. Those numbers caught up to the defense, especially in the 4th quarter. Of course, most teams don't go on 4th down like Washington did, which is either because Ron was against his former team or because of Joey Slye, who can now make a field goal and extra points. Yippee for him. Speaking of 4th downs, both for the Panthers in the last 5 minutes of the game were 2-3 yards and couldn't be converted. Bruh.

Pro:

The o-line only gave up one sack...

Con:

...on the one play you can't give up a sack. The collapse was too quick for an o-line that had been solid last week and decent today. However, the o-line had too many penalties. CMC running 9 yards a carry is meaningless if it doesn't count. The draft and FA needs to be used on o-line. But Panther fans have been saying that for years now, so it's pointless to continue on about it.

Pro:

The defense had 3 sacks and a fumble, forcing 3 punts (one less than the Panthers offense did), and a lower yards per play (5.1 compared to Panthers offense of 6.1; I don't know how that happened). However...

Con:

The defense picked the worst game to have a bad game. Zone coverage was wide open in the middle, the d-line got bullied for the most part, and scary Terry had over 100 yds on 5 catches. Yikes. For a critical part of the team to just not show up is tough, especially with the momentum from last week's game. But it is what is.

Overall:

Solid game on offense, but the execution needs to be better, whether it's 3rd down or points from a turnover. The defense needs to show up more than today, which I'm sure it will. Today was way more of an outlier than the normal. Looking forward to see the Panthers play Miami next week.
