The Carolina Panthers have sent a 2023 6th round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The Panthers will assume his remaining contract liabilities and have the opportunity to negotiate an extension prior to the beginning of free agency this year.
Updated: Gilmore’s cap number for 2021 was set to be around $16M. The final cap number the Panthers should need to account for will be in the neighborhood of $5.5 million dollars. The guaranteed money on Gilmore’s contract will count against the Patriots, that includes $8.5M of a prorated roster bonus, about $2.5M of roster bonuses, and $1.5 M of game checks for the four games that Gilmore played with the Patriots.
Gilmore is a former Super Bowl champion, two-time All-Pro cornerback, and AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In an effort to shore up an ailing secondary, general manager Scott “in on every deal” Fitterer has now acquired a top ten draft pick at corner from a year ago and, now, one of the most decorated veterans in the league.
