The argument for Joe Schoen to be hired as the new Panthers general manager

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

It's rare that I pick up my pen and write for the Panthers lately. As my life has gone on, for good or for ill, I have become a critic. I think it's the natural state of affairs, being a resident of the Carolinas. Both the Hornets and the Panthers are in a miserable state. It seems like every day lately a new shoe drops that throws Charlotte into further turmoil. Whether its overpaying players like Terry Rozier, Gordon Heyward, Teddy Bridgewater, and Shaq Thompson or letting absolute studs like Kemba Walker and Cam Newton walk for free, Charlotte has had a miserable time with their management and they fuck up time and time again. Michael Jordan is the GOAT for worst owners in the NBA and the Panthers are the only team to have to fire the same general manager twice because they were stupid enough to hire him back in the first place.

However, I believe that it is a good day to begin the year anew. The thing about doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing is that it is never too late to do what's right. And right now, the right thing for the Panthers to do is to go out there and get the best general manager on the best team on the market. And that man is Joe Schoen, the assistant GM of the one that got away from us, Brandon Beane.

The argument is as simple as they come. When Brandon Beane left Charlotte because our owner held onto Dave Gettleman for too long, Joe Schoen was the first man that he hired upon arriving in Buffalo to become a general manager. That was in 2017.

Of the players drafted in 2017, three out of six players drafted have started games for the Bills in 2020. Notably, Dion Dawson who was originally drafted out of Temple as a guard in the second round was converted to left tackle where he has been nothing short of excellent since then.

Of the players drafted in 2018, five out of eight players have started games for the Bills in 2020. This includes Josh Allen of course, their current franchise quarterback. He was thought of as a three year project at the time coming from a small school in the Mountain West, usually a death knell for quarterbacks. By surrounding him with talent and patiently developing him, he is now the franchise quarterback three years later. A stunning miracle in and of itself.

Of the players drafted in 2019, four out of eight players have started games for the Bills in 2020. Highlights include the highway robbery of grabbing Cody Ford in the second round, an absolute steal that is serving dividends for the Bills right now.

What you have here is everything the Panthers have wanted and more. When the Bills need to make aggressive moves such as going out to trade for Stefon Diggs, they do so at a price that is decent for both teams. Players like Mario Addison, Josh Norman, AJ Klein, John Brown, Daryl Williams, and more all signed to cheap and affordable contracts and the players are managed carefully so that only the best of their ability is put on the field at one time.

The nursing along of Josh Allen has been nothing short of masterful. He sits on one of the most talented offenses in the NFL by far and it's not even close. He went from throwing 3000 yards on an average offense to throwing 4500 yards, mostly due to a heavily upgraded offensive line and the acquiring of better targets on all fronts. And the success of such ultimately comes down to the man with the plan that was in charge of putting this team together. The general manager of the Buffalo Bills. The man that slipped right through our fingers because of our own stupidity. Brandon Beane.

We're never going to get Brandon Beane back of course. That ship has sailed. But you know who we can get? We can get the guy that was at his side the entire time. The man who watched and endured criticism as Brandon Beane traded away talented players like Sammy Watkins, Ronald Darby, Reggie Ragland, and Marcel Dareus. The man that fought with him in the trenches the entire time and turned around a garbage Buffalo Bills organization into legitimate Super Bowl contenders in just three years.

As Brandon Beane was taken from us, the Panthers can take Joe Schoen from them. He has roots here. Joe's career began at the Carolina Panthers ticket office. And if we get this guy, he is going to lead the Panthers back to the promised land.

As the days come, there will be tremendous pressure for the Panthers to wimp out. To choose a former executive that has spent 20 years in the business simply because he's been there and done it before. Guys like Jerry Reese or Jeff Ireland. Old people that are set in their ways and are more interested in using their connections to get a job rather than go out to get someone that can make a difference. It is the same vein as the Cowboys made when they went out to get Mike McCarthy or how the Redskins went out to get Ron Rivera. The established candidate rather than the candidates with vision. We all see where it ended up. Let us not repeat the same mistakes.

Grab the hottest guy from the hottest team in the NFL. Grab the guy with the excellent draft history, the frugal spending with value in free agency, and the ability to get finances under control in record time.

Joe Schoen for general manager is our guy.

That is the decision from your resident Panthers guru and my decision is final.

I look forward to your praise in the comment section.
