Hidden opportunity for the Carolina Panthers in the 2020 NFL Draft

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

There have been numerous posts here on CSR that address trades that the Carolina Panthers may be interested in. With Carolina in the middle of a roster makeover, it makes sense to step back just a bit and look at what opportunities may be available. I’ve taken a couple of days here, while everyone is homebound, to look and see if I could find an option that has, to this point, been overlooked.

I believe a there may be a chance to make a move that can affect both this and the 2021 NFL Draft for the Panthers. To a large degree it will hinge on how the first six picks unfold, but I believe the probability is fairly high that it will come to pass. I’m looking at making a move in the first round with San Francisco 49ers as a trading partner. The reason I see this as a valid option is the Panthers need to strengthen the roster overall while the 49ers will be looking to fill a specific void that opened up this off-season.

Should Derrick Brown fall to the Panthers pick at No. 7, I believe the 49ers would be very interested in moving up to get him. They traded starting defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 13 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Also, the 49ers are looking at a huge void in their draft since, after their picks at No. 13 and No. 31, they don’t have another selection until No. 156 (No. 10 pick of the fifth round).

Here is a trade proposal that I think makes sense to both teams:

The Panthers send picks No. 7 (R1), No. 69 (R3) and No. 113 (R4) to the 49ers

The 49ers send picks No. 13 (R1), No. 31 (R1), No. 220 (R6) and their 2021 third round pick

In this scenario, the 49ers fill the void left by Buckner’s trade with the draft’s top defensive tackle (on a five-year rookie contract) and two mid-round selections. The Panthers get to strengthen their early draft position (three picks in the top 38) and gain a third round selection in the 2021 draft to continue the roster overhaul.
