Carolina Panthers to sign linebacker Tahir Whitehead to one-year deal, per report

New, comments

Matt Rhule is bringing in another player he is loosely connected to.

Update: The one-year deal for Whitehead is for $2.5 million.

The Carolina Panthers are signing former Las Vegas Raiders (when they were in Oakland) linebacker Tahir Whitehead to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Terms for the deal have not been disclosed.

As you probably expected, Whitehead has a ‘connection’ with Matt Rhule (he played college football at Temple).

Whitehead was selected in the fifth round (No. 138 overall) by the Detroit Lions in the 2012 NFL Draft. He played in Detroit until 2018 when he signed a three-year deal with the Raiders, and played two seasons with the Raiders before being released two weeks ago.

Whitehead has 627 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, five interceptions and 24 pass deflections in his eight-year career.

Depending on the terms of the one-year contract, this has the potential to be a solid move for the Panthers. They need depth at linebacker, as well as veteran leadership, and Whitehead provides both of those things. As long as the financial details of this signing aren’t too crazy, I think we can be mostly happy with this move.
