The Carolina Panthers shocked their entire fanbase, and the coaching staff of the Arizona Cardinals, by declaring Cam Newton out for Sunday’s game. We talked last week about how time would be Netwon’s best friend this season, with the more that passed likely leading to a better, more consistent level of play from him as he heals and gets his rhythm back. Keep in mind this conversation, prompted by his play against the Bucs was started before we knew that he had re-injured his left foot.
Second year back up quarterback Kyle Allen will start in Newton’s stead this weekend, continuing until Newton is either ready to return or Allen is unable to physically continue playing. Don’t worry, Panthers fans, he’s ready.
Newton isn’t the only notable name sitting on Sunday. Second year defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, 2019 free agent signee Bruce Irvin, and offensive tackle Brandon Greene will also be out for the game. Irvin is notable because he has yet to make his debut as a Panther as he has been nursing a hamstring issue.
The good news is that defensive tackle Kawann Short is only questionable. This comes after not practicing all week with a hitherto undisclosed shoulder injury.
