Update: Defensive tackle Kawann Short wasn’t spotted at practice today either, which could be bad for the Panthers’ defensive line with edge rusher Bruce Irvin still battling a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the first two games of the season.

If Short is unable to play, there’s a chance that Vernon Butler could make his season debut.
Vernon Butler said he does not know whether he will be active this week. Likely depends on Kawann Short’s status.— Joe Person (@josephperson) September 19, 2019

The Carolina Panthers are practicing ahead of their Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, and franchise quarterback Cam Newton is once again not participating. This is the third straight day Newton has missed practice after re-aggravating his sprained foot last Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so it’s all but certain that he will not suit up on Sunday. Backup quarterback Kyle Allen is expected to start in Cam’s place.
Cam Newton not at practice again, #asexpected. Kyle Allen, you’re up.— Joe Person (@josephperson) September 19, 2019
There’s currently no timetable for Cam’s return but we can be sure that — despite the fact that Ron Rivera hasn’t officially ruled him out — it’s likely he’ll miss at least one game. It would be different if he’d only missed one practice this week (he rarely practiced every day last season as the team tried to give his shoulder rest during the week). If that were the case there would be a good chance that he could play, but considering that the Panthers had a long weekend due to their Thursday Night Football game in Week 2 and we still haven’t seen Cam on the practice field, it’s safe to assume that he won’t be out there on Sunday.
Stay tuned as we’ll have the rest of today’s injury report when it’s available.
