We’re 18 days away from the Carolina Panthers 2019 season opener, so that means today’s countdown piece is devoted to No. 18 on the roster — wide receiver DeAndrew White.
DeAndrew White, Wide receiver
Bio
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195 lbs
Age: 27 years
College: Alabama
NFL experience: 2 years
DeAndrew White was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 and has spent time with several teams in his brief career: the 49ers, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and now the Panthers. Most of his NFL career has been spent on practice squads as he’s only been active in six regular season games with one start: four games in 2015 with the 49ers, and two games (with one start) in 2017 with the Texans. He has three receptions for 42 yards in his career. White spent six weeks in 2018 on the Panthers’ practice squad and signed a reserve future contract with Carolina in December.
White has a long road ahead of him if he wants to make the 53-man roster. The Panthers — for what feels like the first time in team history — seem to be set at the wide receiver position from top to bottom. There’s a chance they will carry six receivers this year, and only five spots are currently ‘guaranteed’, so White has an outside chance to make the team if he can have a better preseason than the other guys competing for that same spot. It’s unlikely he’ll make the cut, however, as both Terry Godwin and Andre Levrone have had impressive showings so far in the preseason. White is a good candidate for the practice squad and could be used as a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ option for Carolina in 2019, but it’s likely that we won’t see him again in Carolina after the preseason is over.
