The Carolina Panthers do not currently have a player wearing No. 96. My theory is they are holding it open for our annual signing of Wes Horton, who is the player most recently wearing the number in a game. That theory is complicated because it would first require the Saints to cut Horton, which is where he ended up after six on and off seasons in Carolina. The Saints just signed Horton on May 21 so the reality is Horton is most likely done as a Panther.
Consider the Panthers’ depth at defensive end now as compared to seasons past. We have these four hold overs and then three new pass rushers whom the Panthers are listing as linebacker/defensive end.
I’m starting to think maybe the Panthers plan to run the 3-4 a lot more than just as a change of pace or gimmick scheme. They appear to be gearing up for significant use of the 3-4. It might be all but an announced change to the 3-4. Yet it could be something in the middle.
We could also be witnessing the beginning of a new trend in defensive football. In the future teams might strive to have the personnel to run both schemes, being able to switch back and forth based on the circumstance (and ability to change out personnel between plays). We know many offenses will run the no huddle in hopes of ‘trapping’ certain defensive personnel on the field. That will certainly be in future game plans from opposing offensive coordinators. But I digress.
Summer is here, we have 96 days left to enjoy before our passion kick offs. The long story short is that Horton is done as a Panther because they value speed, something he doesn’t have.
Cheers!
