It’s not the greatest opportunity for a rookie quarterback, making his first start for a team eliminated from the playoffs and riding a six game losing streak, yet Will Grier will have to make the best of it. Honestly at this point the bar is not set very high. His predecessor Kyle Allen has a Pro Football Focus grade of 50 and has committed 22 turnovers in 12 starts. The Carolina Panthers have not formally announced Grier as the starter but it is expected any time now. The rumors are flying all over Twitter and it just makes too much sense.
I’m not going to be so stupid to say Grier could not do worse than Allen has these past six games. Be careful what you wish for I always say. Yet I completely agree it’s time to give the rookie a chance to see what he can do even if both the Panthers and Indianapolis Colts have been eliminated from the playoffs.
The Colts defense has been kind to quarterbacks this season, so Grier should have an opportunity to make plays down the field. It doesn’t hurt he has Christian McCaffrey, the most productive running back in the league this season, at his disposal. He also has 1,000 yard receiver DJ Moore to throw to. Moore has truly emerged as a No. 1 wide receiver for the Panthers in his second season.
There were many pundits that thought Grier was under valued going into the draft while many thought the Panthers reached. The Panthers were obviously in the former camp. Fans can point to a number of draft picks the Panthers passed on to draft Grier that could have helped this season. In that regard, I want to see Grier do well to feel better about spending that third round pick. At the time I thought at the least we got a solid back-up with the pick. Well that isn’t good enough for me now. We already have a decent back up in my opinion in Kyle Allen. We need a starter as insurance against Cam Newton not returning to the Panthers for whatever reason.
Do you think starting Will Grier at quarterback against the Colts is a good idea?
