When this game started I fully expected the Panthers to lose, and I thought it would be one of those games where the outcome was all but decided by halftime. But that’s not what happened. The Panthers went into a quick 14-0 hole, but fought back valiantly to keep the game close and never let it get out of reach. They tied the game late in the second half and even had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Joey Slye’s field goal attempt sailed wide and the Saints drove down the field and won on Will Lutz’s 33-yard game winner as time expired.
Kyle Allen played one of the best games of his career today. He was 23 of 36 for 256 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. It was arguably the best game of his young career as he improved in areas that have been less-than-stellar for him in games past — he stepped up into the pocket, he threw the deep ball with accuracy and he made sound decisions. I was impressed with his effort today and believe he played well enough to get a win, but football is a cruel sport sometimes.
Joey Slye had his worst game in a Panthers uniform. He missed two extra point attempts and couldn’t hit a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that would have given the Panthers a 34-31 lead and made Will Lutz’s 33-yard attempt a kick to tie the game instead of win it. I feel bad for Slye, but I also have to wonder if the Panthers will bring in a few kickers to work out this week, even if it’s just to send a message to the rookie.
The defense had an up-and-down game, giving up some big plays but also coming away with a few key stops. They couldn’t quite get the job done today, however, and the Saints were able to drive down the field and kick the game-winner as time expired.
The Panthers are now 5-6 and all but eliminated from the playoff race. They have a Week 13 clash with Washington next week where they’ll try to get back to .500 and see what happens. Hopefully they can shake this bitter loss off and be ready to go back at it next Sunday.
