As part of his extended sit-down with the media on Tuesday, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper confirmed that training camp would remain at Wofford College for the 2019 season.
Tepper also confirmed this summer’s training camp would again be at Wofford. Plans for training camps beyond that remain unclear, but Tepper did make clear he wants to continue to have a connection in Spartanburg – while building stronger ones across both Carolinas.
It’s not surprising. The Panthers are under contract with Wofford to hold training camp there through 2019, but it’s unclear what will happen in 2020 and beyond. Tepper feels strongly about the ‘Two States, One Team’ mantra and has consistently reiterated his desire for the team to have a presence in both states. With the Panthers playing their games in Bank of America stadium for the foreseeable future, a South Carolina training camp trip or South Carolina practice facilities seem like the easiest way to keep South Carolina involved.
Tepper said he wants to keep the connection with Spartanburg. He’s also seemingly made a conscious effort to separate this team from Jerry Richardson wherever possible. It’ll be interesting to see how he balances those two ideas when it comes time to choose a site for 2020.
