According to a tweet from Bryan Strickland, the Carolina Panthers have released defensive lineman Drew Iddings on the eve of training camp and are expected to fill his roster spot with a tight end due to Chris Manhertz starting the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (aka PUP) list.
Marty Hurney says team has waived DL Drew Iddings with idea of signing a tight end, in part because Chris Manhertz is on preseason PUP.

With Manhertz being unable to suit up at the start of training camp it makes a little sense to want an extra tight end running drills with the offense. The Panthers currently have four active tight ends on the roster: Greg Olsen, Ian Thomas, Evan Bayliss and James Vander Laan. Given that they’ll want to limit Olsen’s activities as much as they can over the first few days (since he’s kind of an important piece to the offense being good), adding someone to get Manhertz’s reps in practice is probably a solid decision.
The Panthers will hold their first training camp practice at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Stay tuned for more information on this story, as we’ll provide an update to the player that is added to the roster to replace Iddings as soon as that information is made available to us.
