According to Bill Voth of Panthers.com, the Carolina Panthers claimed quarterback Taylor Heinicke off waivers today.
The Panthers picked up Taylor Heinicke off waivers from the Texans, who released the quarterback Friday.
Old Dominion’s all-time leading passer, Heinicke landed in Minnesota as an undrafted rookie in 2015. He spent two seasons with the Vikings and was waived/injured before the start of the 2017 regular season.
After a short stint on the Patriots’ practice squad, Heinicke wound up in Houston. He made his regular season debut in Week 16 but suffered a concussion on his ninth snap.
This is a move that makes perfect sense for the Panthers, who only had two quarterbacks on the roster (Cam Newton and Garrett Gilbert) when OTAs started this morning. With the team now in the first phase of their offseason workouts, it makes sense to bring in another arm to run drills. It’s unlikely that Heinicke will stay with the team past OTAs and training camp, but crazier things have happened. They do have a need for a third quarterback, after all.
