Update: According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Breeland cut his leg, which ended up getting infected. It will take a few months to fully heal.
Almost #Panthers CB Bashaud Breeland cut his foot in a non-football injury and it got infected, source said. He is now a few months away from being able to pass a physical. Brutal.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 16, 2018
According to a tweet from Bill Voth, the Carolina Panthers will not be signing free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland after he failed a physical.
CB Bashaud Breeland failed a physical and won’t be signing with the Panthers.— Bill Voth (@PanthersBill) March 16, 2018
Per Max Henson, the reason given was a ‘non-football injury’.
Bashaud Breeland will not be joining the Panthers after all. Failed physical (non-football injury).— Max Henson (@PanthersMax) March 16, 2018
For those who had been asking questions about an official announcement the last couple days, now you know.
NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo reports that the non-football injury is something that happened ‘recently’ and wasn’t expected to prevent Breeland from signing anywhere.
With Bashaud Breeland, there was a non-football incident that occured recently, a source said. It was supposedly nothing that would hold up a deal. Guess it was,— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 16, 2018
What this means for the Panthers
They still have a huge hole at the cornerback position. After trading Daryl Worley to the Eagles for wide receiver Torrey Smith, the Panthers are in serious need of depth in the secondary. Perhaps now they will turn their focus to the NFL Draft to find a replacement for Worley.
What do you think about this, Panthers fans? Are you upset that Breeland won’t be signing after all, or do you think the Panthers dodged a bullet? Share your thoughts with us!
