NFL free agency: Carolina Panthers expected to meet with tight end Luke Willson tonight, per report

New, comments

The free agent tight end has spent the first five years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

According to a tweet from Mike Garafolo, the Carolina Panthers are expected to meet with free agent tight end Luke Willson tonight.

Willson was drafted by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and has spent his entire career there as their secondary tight end. In his career against the Panthers (three games), Willson has two receptions for 39 yards and one touchdown. (Side note: I swear it seems like he has way more than that.)

Since he’s been Seattle’s second tight end for his career he doesn’t have a ton of stats, but he does have 11 career touchdowns.

Luke Willson career stats

Year Games Targets Rec Yards Yds/Rec TD
Year Games Targets Rec Yards Yds/Rec TD
2013 16 28 20 272 13.6 1
2014 15 40 22 362 16.5 3
2015 14 26 17 213 12.5 1
2016 11 21 15 129 8.6 2
2017 16 22 15 153 10.2 4
Career 72 137 89 1129 12.7 11

Does he fit with Carolina?

Yes, he does. The Panthers need a second tight end now that Ed Dickson is a free agent, and Willson is better than any of the options currently on the roster. He should also be fairly cheap, which is a nice bonus.

Provided Willson doesn’t cost too much against the salary cap, he’s certainly a player that Marty Hurney should target. He immediately makes the tight end group better, and isn’t that the goal we’re shooting for?

What do you think about the possibility of signing Luke Willson, Panthers fans? Do you think it’s a good idea? Share your thoughts with us!
