In his latest mock draft, Mel Kiper Jr. from ESPN (Insider required) has picked a deep threat wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, and it’s a pick that’s starting to generate some steam based on recent mock drafts across the internet.
24. Carolina Panthers - James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
When Cam Newton was league MVP in 2015, he had a deep threat in Ted Ginn Jr. who could take the top off defenses. Ginn had [ten] touchdowns and averaged almost 17 yards per catch. Washington could be that guy for the Panthers. He averaged 19.8 yards per catch and had 39 touchdowns at Oklahoma State. He is great after the catch. At [5’11’, 210 lbs], Washington is undersized, but he was one of the best receivers at the Senior Bowl. He consistently beat defenders in one-on-ones, just like I saw on his college tape.
We covered Washington last week when CBS Sports mocked him to the Panthers, so I’m not going to go into a lot of detail again. If you missed the CBS Sports piece it’s linked and you can take a few moments to read over what others have said about Washington as a prospect.
I will, however, re-post my thoughts from the CBS Sports mock draft piece.
My take
I don’t hate this pick. I think the Panthers could use a player with Washington’s skill set on offense, but I’m not sure if I’m 100% on board with them taking him at No. 24 overall. If they did I wouldn’t be mad, though.
