Panthers 33 Giants 31: Graham Gano rescues the Panthers at the buzzer with a 63-yard game winner

The Panthers somehow came out on top over the Giants 33-31.

If you buy something from an SB Nation link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement.

The Panthers just won a football game that they had no business winning. After letting the Giants come back late in the fourth quarter to take a 31-30 lead, the Panthers offense had just 90-ish seconds to make something happen.

They made something happen, alright.

After a few questionable calls on offense, the Panthers were faced with an unpleasant proposition—a 63-yard field goal attempt with just six seconds left on the clock. Graham Gano—whose career long until today was 54 yards—came out for a chance to bring the Panthers back from the depths of defeat.

And he did.

Gano buried the kick. Distance wise, it would have been good from at least 67 yards, but he barely squeaked it inside the upright to give the Panthers an unexpected win in a game that really shouldn’t have been that close.

The Panthers let the Giants score first, but then took over the game thanks to Curtis Samuel turning in to Beast Mode for his first career touchdown. Then, the Giants decided to give the Panthers another touchdown on a muffed punt that was recovered in the end zone by THE ACE THAT RUNS THE PLACE COLIN JONES, and we thought we were en route to a dominating performance from the Panthers.

That’s not what happened, though. Because we can’t have nice things around here, the Panthers offense went into turtle mode, and as expected the Giants made a game of it in the second half. Eventually they took the lead with under two minutes to go because the Panthers decided to stop tackling for some reason, which gave every Panthers fan feelings of frustration for letting a winnable game get away from them.

But then Gano happened, and the Panthers are now 3-1.

Honestly, that insane ending was the perfect exclamation point for today’s game, and thankfully the Panthers were able to come out on top.

The 3-1 Panthers head to Washington next week, so hopefully they can keep this momentum going for another week and pick up their third straight win.
