Believe it or not, not every Panthers played like ass against the Saints. In fact I could narrow it down to less than a handful but that’s not my purpose at the moment. Instead let’s pick one performance worthy of recognition...now that you’ve had a cooling off period. Let cool heads prevail I always say.
One loss does not a season make. The first always sucks, even when you won the first 14. We know what that feels like don’t we? So we need to hope Rivera and company can figure this out. For now though, here are your candidates:
RB Christian McCaffrey
The kid ran tough, made some nice catches out of the back field and basically maximized just about every touch. McCaffrey caught 9 of 11 targets for 101 yards and added another 16 on 4 carries. So that’s 13 touches 117 yards or 9 yards a touch. That’s pretty damn good in my book.
WR Devin Funchess
After WR Kelvin Benjamin went out of the game with injury you could see Funchess get a spring in his step. He was ready and Cam Newton obliged to the tune of 10 targets. The problem was Newton left his passing accuracy on the team bus. Funchess did manage to coral 4 catches for 58 yards, a nifty 14.5 yards per catch average.
S Kurt Coleman
Coleman led the defense in combined tackles with 9 and a tackle for loss. Coleman was bringing the wood and is definitely the Panthers ‘enforcer’ so to speak in the secondary. He doesn’t shy away from the big hit.
LB Luke Kuechly
Kuechly finished with 8 tackles and one passed defensed. Truth be told though he should have had a pick 6 and I’m sure he would agree. That might have sparked the offense...naaaaah. The offense I saw needed more than a spark...more like a 12 pack of Duraflame logs, a gallon of gas and a blow torch. But I digress...
DE Mario Addison
Addison had a nice game in 45 snaps with 6 combined tackles and the Panthers lone sack. He also made a nice play on RB Adrian Peterson on 3rd and 1 late to force a FG try.
