According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have signed former Green Bay Packers cornerback Ladarius Gunter, who was released yesterday. In order to make room for him on the 53-man roster, the Panthers have decided to part ways with rookie kicker Harrison Butker.
Adam Schefter has confirmed the news.
Panthers claimed former Packers' CB LaDarius Gunter on waivers and waived K Harrison Butker.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 13, 2017
Graham Gano was given the opportunity to keep his job in Week 1 against the 49ers, and apparently his 3/3 performance on field goals less than 40 yards was good enough to convince the Panthers brass to keep him for the entire year. Regardless of which kicker they wanted, the other one was taking up space on the 53-man roster that could be used elsewhere, so it’s good to see the Panthers are attempting to fix a depth problem in the secondary by picking up Gunter.
According to Joe Person, the Panthers will likely put Butker on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
Based on Ron Rivera's comments last week, I'd bet Butker winds up back here on practice squad IF he clears waivers.— Joe Person (@josephperson) September 13, 2017
The long kicking battle is finally over, Panthers fans, and Graham Gano is the victor. Hopefully they made the right call, but only time will tell.
