Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been the biggest surprise of the NFL season so far

The Chiefs’ starting QB is the NFL’s top-rated passer through the first week of the season.

SB Nation’s NFL sites are all writing articles today about the biggest surprises in the NFL after the first week of the season. For CSR’s contribution I wanted to write something about the Panthers since this is a Panthers site, but honestly nothing really surprised me in their 23-3 win over the 49ers last Sunday. In fact, I even predicted the Panthers would win 27-10.

So, I’m going to talk about something else. Our friends at Arrowhead Pride have already mentioned my biggest surprise for the season so far, but since nothing else has genuinely surprised me I’m going to talk about it anyway.

Alex Smith is the top rated quarterback in the NFL after Week 1. Yes, that Alex Smith.

Even more surprising - not only is Smith the top QB in the league, but Tom Brady (yes, that Tom Brady) is among the worst (24th out of 30 if you haven’t bothered to click the link).

Don’t believe me? Let’s look at the stats.

Alex Smith vs Tom Brady - Week 1, 2017

Player Team Comp Att Pct Yds Yds/Att Long TD Int Sack Rating
Player Team Comp Att Pct Yds Yds/Att Long TD Int Sack Rating
Alex Smith KC 28 35 80.0 368 10.51 78 4 0 3 148.6
Tom Brady NE 16 36 44.4 267 7.42 54 0 0 3 70.0

Only time will tell if Smith will be able to keep up this production, but the fact that he did this against the Patriots on their home turf in the season opener is a huge surprise. The not-so-good part of this surprise, though, is when you have Tom Brady as your starting fantasy QB with Alex Smith on your bench. That’s not fun at all.

What do you think, Panthers fans? What was your biggest surprise this week?
