Cam Newton isn’t expected to play tomorrow when the Panthers take on the Texans in the preseason opener.
According to a report from Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, this is because of a setback in his recovery from shoulder surgery he suffered on July 30 after throwing in live drills.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton did light throwing again Monday, but is not expected to play in Wednesday’s preseason opener against Houston.
Newton hasn’t thrown in live drills since July 30, when he experienced a setback in his recovery from rotator cuff surgery. But he’s now done light throwing three days in a row, including the last two days with head trainer Ryan Vermillion during practice.
It’s been more than a week since the Panthers shut down Newton after he experienced pain in his right shoulder. He had participated in the first five practices of training camp, although his passes seemed to lack their usual zip.
Newton has been doing light throwing on the side for the last three days, but the coaching staff will most likely sit him out of the preseason opener just to be on the safe side. Even if Newton could suit up and play — because of Wednesday’s game being the first of four preseason warm-ups — he would only play one or two series anyway. At this point, keeping him out is the better long-term option.
Newton was expected to be 100% ready for training camp, but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case thus far. It’s probably too early to sound the alarms, but it’s definitely a situation that needs to be monitored closely. If Cam still isn’t ready to go by the time the Panthers travel to Jacksonville for their third preseason game against the Jaguars, then we may need to start freaking out.
As for now, let’s just stay positive and hope this blows over soon.
