Panthers: Olsen contract negotiations spur bigger issues | Brandon Scott, Cat Crave
Currently, Olsen is under contract through the 2018 season but prior to training camp let it be known he prefers a new deal. Both Olsen and veteran linebacker Thomas Davis seeking extensions with Panthers former general manager Dave Gettleman have been connected to his abrupt departure.
...
At 32-years of age, Olsen is also likely entering the final stage of his career and has undoubtedly out performed his current deal. However, being paid as a middle of the league player (Olsen is No. 12 in guaranteed money for his position) and being awarded a new contract based on production raises a series of important questions.
I can see the benefit to waiting another year, but at the same time if the Panthers want to sign Greg Olsen to an extension they should just go ahead and do it. No need to delay the inevitable.
Panthers' Kelvin Benjamin has created a mindset to 'dominate this year' | David Newton, ESPN
Kelvin Benjamin had just finished another hard day of practice on a hot, muggy Tuesday that was highlighted by another spectacular catch that he made look spectacularly easy.
But the fourth-year Carolina Panthers wide receiver didn't want to talk about the catch. He didn't want to [talk] about his offseason battle with his weight or about the loss of his mother the week before training camp. He was nice about not wanting to talk, mind you.
That just wasn't where Benjamin wanted to go at the moment.
"I just want to focus on getting better," he said.
I truly hope Benjamin brings that mindset to the field this year, because when he’s focuses he can be an unstoppable weapon in the red zone. The Panthers need as many of those as they can get.
Hurney recalls meeting that saved Davis' career | Bill Voth, Panthers.com
In late September 2011, four men sat in a room at Bank of America Stadium. They had no idea it would turn into one of the most important meetings in Panthers’ history.
It was just a few days after Thomas Davis tore his ACL for the third time in less than 23 months, and as the star-crossed linebacker sat down to chat with Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson, general manager Marty Hurney and head coach Ron Rivera, Davis figured he’d be told to call it a career. Instead, he was encouraged to give it one more comeback, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad they convinced him to give it one more go.
