Career
Daryl Worley was selected in the 3rd round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Panthers and was thrown to the wolves immediately due to a lack of cornerbacks on the roster. Despite some setbacks he played pretty well overall, and looks to be the started alongside James Bradberry for the Panthers this season.
Here’s a summary of his rookie season, courtesy of Panthers.com:
2016: Selected by Carolina in the third round (77th overall) of the NFL Draft. Played in all 16 games with 11 starts at cornerback. Ranked second on the team with 10 passes defensed. Recorded 81 tackles, one interception and one sack. Contributed to a defense that finished second in the NFL with 47 sacks and tied for fourth with 17 interceptions.
Vs. Tampa Bay (10/10): Made first career start at cornerback. Tallied three tackles before leaving the game with a concussion.
Vs. Arizona (10/30): Victimized Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer for first career sack, dropping him for a seven-yard loss in the second quarter. Contributed to a defense that tallied eight sacks, second most in franchise history.
Vs. San Diego (12/11): Established career highs with team-leading 12 tackles and three passes defensed. Notched first career interception, snagging a pass by Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers on the opening play of the second quarter and returning the ball 22 yards. Contributed to a defense that recorded five takeaways.
Worley has looked good so far in training camp and should be able to improve upon his rookie campaign now that he has more experience in the NFL. The Panthers may have found the solution to their secondary woes when they drafted Worley and Bradberry, but only time will tell. So far, it looks like they have.
