Career
Ben Jacobs NFL career began in 2011 as an undrafted free agent signee for the Cleveland Browns. He ended up spending most of his time on their practice squad before being terminated the following year. The Bengals added him in 2012 but he didn’t stay very long. In 2013, Jacobs caught on with Carolina and started the season once again on the practice squad. He ended up getting the call up 3 games in following the trade of Jon Beason. He ended the season on the practice squad, but played every game since as a special teamer until last season. Jacobs ended up getting injured and waived on an injury settlement. Carolina brought him back at the end of the year.
Jacobs is a perfect example of how far you can get on pure special teams value. I remember being surprised every time Carolina retained him, but it is clear that you may get an opportunity if you have the ability to contribute as a special teamer. I think Jacobs might not make it through this year with promising guys like Jeremy Cash, Ben Boulware, and Jared Norris nipping at his heels, but he has the experience and is a proven commodity.
