Cam Newton put to bed some concerns about the progress of his recovery following off-season shoulder surgery with the help of the Panthers social media crew, and released a short hype clip of him tossing a few footballs. While it’s not exactly live action, what it does show is that Cam is on track in his recovery, and that he certainly ought to be ready for action come training camp.
It also corroborates the story on Panthers.com that Cam Newton has been leading this charge back to the Super Bowl this off-season, despite his surgery, through his tireless work in the weight room and involvement on the field in any way possible.
“I would single out Cam Newton first. Cam came back extremely focused, and that’s a testament to him. Whatever his self-evaluation was during the offseason, kudos to him. It was impressive to see for all of us. He understands his role. He could have taken a little step back knowing he was coming off shoulder surgery, but it was the exact opposite.”
— Joe Kenn, Head strength and conditioning coach
“I think a guy with a lesser work ethic and lesser drive would have taken that whole situation pretty negatively, but he took advantage of every opportunity he was able to work at something. Did everything we asked and more. That speaks boatloads. Really, a guy in his position could have taken it easy knowing how much time he had (before training camp.) He probably would have been fine, but that’s just not the type of guy he is. He was super focused the whole way through.
“He’s so hard on himself and internally motivated as an athlete. He wants things to go a little differently than they did last year.”
— Jason Benguche, Assistant strength and conditioning coach
There has been a lot of talk lately about whether Cam Newton is a good leader, and whether he exhibits the qualities that are required to inspire other young men to play alongside and for him. Well, i would argue that inspiration is second nature to this now seasoned and surgically improved leader. Are there things he needs to work on? Absolutely. But, how can you possibly watch him this off-season if you are a teammate, both in the weight room and on the field, constantly involved and constantly working, and not be inspired?
Heck, after watching this video... I bet even the Play 60 kid has probably stopped loosening his arm up, at least for the time being.
How does a leader lead? How do you inspire others and get them to rally around you? You put your money where your mouth is. You say you’re going to work hard, and you work the hardest. You put in time beyond the amount required to be good, so that you instead can be GREAT. And above all... when you fail, you acknowledge your failures, and strive to overcome them at all costs. Be frustrated with your failure, but learn and grow.
This video is welcome news for us as fans, welcome news for teammates, and certainly welcome news if you are Derek Anderson.
I guess I can cancel that 2pm conference call with Cam Newton’s surgeon after all.
