NFL Standings through Week 12

With the last of team byes being taken in week 11 of the NFL season, it seems like a logical time to start looking at team rankings for the season. These rankings are very important since, at the completion of the regular season, they are used to determine the draft positions of non-playoff teams. Additionally, these rankings are used as the tie-breaker between playoff teams with identical win/loss records that are eliminated within the same round of post season play.

I think when you start digesting all this information a couple of really interesting tidbits arise. First, look at who has had the easiest Strength of Schedule (SoS) so far this season. The Eagles and the Seahawks! When you look at who they actually played, another fact becomes readily apparent. ..the juggernaut Eagles have only played two teams with a winning record. The Eagles lost to Kansas City (6-5) and beat Carolina (8-3) but only after the Panthers had two chances to pull out the win at the end of the game. The Seahawks have played three teams with winning records and lost two of those. The Seahawks lost to Tennessee (7-4) and Atlanta (7-4) while getting a good win against the Los Angeles Rams in L.A.

Another thing that jumps out at you is that the Chicago Bears, with their .636 SoS, have been under the gun for the entire season. You almost suspect devine intervention was involved when the Panthers had a poor showing in Chicago. The Bears have only had three opponents with a losing record…two considering they played the Packers (5-6) twice. Their other opponent with a losing record was the Buccaneers (4-7). Even then, they lost all three of those games. Almost unbelievably, their wins came against the Panthers (8-3), in OT against the Steelers (9-2), and again in OT over the Ravens (6-5).

As far as where the teams currently stand with their 2018 NFL Draft picks, here is the current placement of teams (with playoff teams showing their current seeding):
