Stewart Brings Much Needed Punch to Offense

Though it was nice to see Cam Newton under center for the first time this season, the biggest surprise was the punch RB Jonathan Stewart brought to the running game. Especially inside the five yard line.

Once the Panther offense finally got untracked in the 2nd quarter they drove down the field into the red zone. On 2nd and 2 on the Chiefs 2 yd line Stewart went off left guard and was hit behind the line of scrimmage by Pro Bowl LB Derrick Johnson. Stewart shrugged him off:

Credit Amini Silatolu and Ed Dickson for great blocks that enabled Stewart to then drive into the end zone. On Stewart second touch the offensive line makes it look much easier as Stewart hits the same hole:

This time its center Ryan Kalil and Silatolu who maul their match-ups creating just enough of crease for Stewart to blow through. This was an impressive performance in preseason action for the Panthers running game. Stewart finished with only 4 carries for 26 yards (6.5) but the two scores were huge.

In the second half recent pick-up RB Fozzy Whitaker carried the ball 13 times for 71 yards and looked like a serious contender for the 3rd string RB spot. Kenjon Barner should be seriously worried.
