Another piece from the Panthers legendary 2013 defensive line returns. According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers re-signed veteran nose tackle Colin Cole earlier today to a one-year contract. This is an excellent signing because not only does it provide the Panthers solid depth, but it also allows Panthers Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott to once again get creative with his defensive line sub-packages.
Although Cole played only 309 defensive snaps (31 percent of total snaps) in 2013, his steady presence at nose tackle allowed McDermott to exploit opposing offensive lines by playing Star Lotulelei at the under-tackle position, where he was a mismatch against guards in one-on-one situations.
Expect the 33-year old Cole to have a similar part-time role next season as an early down nose tackle.
