We all but knew this one was coming, but it's finally been made official: The Panthers have agreed to terms with former Cardinals cornerback Antoine Cason on a 1 year deal. The six year veteran spent last season with the Cardinals, after the former 1st round selection spent his first five seasons with the San Diego Chargers. This news comes on the heels of another Panthers' signing, namely wide receiver Tiquan Underwood -- who inked a 2 year deal earlier today, per multiple sources.
Keeping the San Diego to Carolina connection alive and well, Cason has worked with Ron Rivera before on a defense ranked in the upper echelon of the league during the coach's years as defensive coordinator. Cason also worked with Carolina's secondary coach Steve Wilks, so this signing makes a lot of sense.
Cason has 14 career interceptions and 58 career pass deflections, and has played in all 16 games every season of his career. He will join newly acquired safety Roman Harper in the new edition of the "Legion of Whom". The 27 year old should step in as a starter right away, and at the very least provides quality depth to a relatively young and inexperienced cornerback group. This may not be the huge free agent splash some fans were hoping for, but with the retention of Greg Hardy this offseason, the Panthers explosive front seven should make the DB's jobs much easier.
