Another day of practice is in the books, even though there was a slight delay due to inclement weather. Thankfully, the team was able to get an entire practice session in.
Geoff Hangartner released
There are always veteran cuts in training camps. By now everyone realizes it's just part of the business. Today the Panthers somewhat surprisingly parted ways with veteran OG Geoff Hangartner:
The #Panthers have released G Geoff Hangartner.

While many fans have speculated that this means the Panthers are going to sign Travelle Wharton, head coach Ron Rivera has stated that the team doesn't plan on signing a veteran replacement.
According to reports, Garry Williams moves into the starting RG spot.
Panthers release G Geoff Hangartner, no plans to bring in veteran replacement. Garry Williams promoted to starter. http://t.co/vXqRHL8Ryb

Rivera admits that cutting Hangartner with an untested rookie is a risk, but he's also confident in Williams' ability to step in and play.
Rivera says cutting Hangartner without seeing a lot of Kugbila was bit of a leap of faith. But they feel good about Williams in particular.

Rivera also wanted to cut Hangartner early to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else:
Rivera: Potential in young guys at guard. And we want to be fair to Geoff to let him go early in preseason

That was a nice gesture, I suppose.
Secondary competition still "open"
According to Rivera, the competition for the starting secondary spots is still open, but Joe Person sees it differently:
Rivera says secondary comp is open, but it's been same 4 starters for several days--Munnerlyn, Florence, Mitchell and Godfrey.
— Joe Person (@josephperson) August 1, 2013
We'll have to keep an eye on the secondary, but don't be surprised if that group of four is the starting unit.
Armanti making an impression at WR
I know, I know - he has a reputation for shining in camp. At least the coaches are noticing this time.
Rivera said Armanti has a real chance to be No. 3 WR. "Big question is him catching in traffic. We'll see in the preseason games"
— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) August 1, 2013
If he keeps playing the way he has so far in camp, he's going to push someone else off the roster. If I were Gettis or Pilares, I would start worrying.
Miscellaneous Notes
Haruki Nakamura and Kenjon Barner exchanged words after Nakamura made a tackle that Barner didn't appreciate.
Nakamura horse collars Barner. Barner asks, What the blank you doing? Fundamental tackle, Haruki says. Fundamental my blank, says Barner.
— Tom Sorensen (@tomsorensen) August 1, 2013
Personally I find that story hard to believe. I mean, Nakamura making a play? Come on, that can't be true.
And finally, here's Cam with the quote of the day:
Big Brandon Williams makes short catch and speeds into end zone. DBs don't try him. "You don't want no thighs for dinna!" Cam yells
— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) August 1, 2013
But everyone likes thighs Cam. At least, most everyone does.
Well, that's it for today's Twitter recap. We'll be back tomorrow after practice with another post highlighting the day's events. As always stay tuned to CSR for more updates from Spartanburg.
