Here at CSR we've spent more than a fair amount of time discussing and postulating the veteran QB position. As good as these conversations are, they're very difficult to project without knowing what a new CBA will look like. However, Jason Reid of the Washington Post (via National Football Post) says the price for McNabb on the open market could be rock bottom:
it would still be surprising if any team offered more than a sixth- or conditional seventh-round pick for him.
If this truly the market value for Donovan McNabb then can the Carolina Panthers afford to say no?
More after the jump
The concern with McNabb has remained constant throughout this process, that he doesn't have a good grasp on what his role is in the NFL now. Unlike some players who are willing to age gracefully, McNabb seems to have more Brett Favre in him and less Jon Kitna. Ultimately, this could lead to some challenges for the Panthers should they decide to start Cam Newton over Donovan McNabb, especially if Newton struggles early.
It's a risk to be sure, but in terms of the current veteran QB market there's nobody with as much potential to start as Donovan McNabb. What remains to be seen is if he can handle what his role would be in the modern NFL.
Let's assume the price for McNabb is a 7th round pick, that improves to a 6th round pick if he takes 40% of the snaps in 2011. Based on this condition would you advocate the Panthers trading for the Redskins' QB?
