CSR Mock Draft Update 2.0: Is OT Chris Williams Sliding?

So now not only is Charlotte.com claiming Chris Williams is dropping down draft boards but now Pro Football Weekly is too. Take a read of the reasons that are being sited:

The greatest need of the Texans, at No. 18, is a left tackle, and Vanderbilt’s Chris Williams could be available. The way we hear it, concerns about the variations in the size of Williams’ arms and legs, with one being shorter than the opposite limb, could affect his status. Furthermore, multiple team sources say he has been removed from consideration on their draft boards for medical reasons, which could play into the Texans’ favor.

One arm is longer than the other? He has medical issues? My first thought is someone is creating false rumors so this guy will slide on purpose. It’s too funny not to be but on second thought...I’ve heard enough to suggest the Panthers are not interested in Williams. Therefore I think it warrants a change in my official Panthers Mock Draft. I’m dropping OT Chris Williams as the Panthers pick at #13 and instead I’m picking RB Rashard Mendenhall. I am almost positive that if DE Derrick Harvey is available the Panthers will take him. They may even trade up a few spots to grab him. But with the Chiefs trading away Jared Allen I think they will go DE with this pick for sure. That will push Harvey into the top 10 in my opinion as either Cincinnati or New Orleans will target him. I’m almost sure the Broncos will snag Ryan Clady so that leaves the offensive playmaker as their target. Mendenhall will provide another weapon opposing defenses will have to game plan. I get exciting thinking about having Mendenhall and Williams in the backfield.

So of course that changes my 2nd round pick and a couple subsequent picks. Again, I want to emphasize this is what I think the Panthers will do, not what they should do. In the 2nd round I now like OT Anthony Collins from Kansas. There may not be a grand plan on move Travelle Wharton to LG right away. Collins will have a few games to mature depending on how the season progresses. Check out the rest of my picks and let me know what you think.

BTW, I haven't included the two 7th round supplemental picks yet. It would be a shot in the dark anyway.

mock drafts

Mock drafts are getting on my nerves.  How many of these mock drafts are based on guys reading other guys' mock drafts?  The information available about Chris Williams is the same as was available a month ago.  It's possible that some teams are focused more on one position than another, so maybe it's not that he's a worse football player than he was a month ago, but other players look better based on team needs.  The fact is that we'll have a choice, either the number 3 OT or the #3 DE.  If we think Otah or Cherilus are better than Williams, they'll be available.  Harvey is not on the same level as Chris Long or Vernon Gholston.  I would like someone to look at the best highlights of LaBrandon Toefield and let me know if Mendenhall the collegian looks better than Toefield in Jacksonfield.  I'm not extremely high on Toefield, I'm just not sure we need to pick a RB in the 1st rd when we don't have a weakness there.  If we pick Mendenhall, who will start on the line?  Wharton, Kalil, Gross, Bridges, and who else?

A couple questions we need to ask are if any of the remaining OTs can come in and start right away.  If not, then maybe Mendenhall is a better pick because he will be able to play right away, at least a few carries a game.

How is Mendenhall's pass blocking compared to Jonathon Stewart's?  I'm not convinced that Derrick Harvey will be good enough to beat out Charles Johnson.  If he will be, then I think picking him is a better idea than picking Mendenhall.

Call me crazy, but I still think D-Will is good for 1500 yards rushing and 500 receiving, and 15 TDs.  Toefield can come in and pound out a yard or two the way Brandon Jacobs did when he was a rookie.  Without a better OL, though, no one, not even Mendenhall, will be able to get it done.  As of right now, after losing Wahle and Hartwig, our OL is actually worse than last year.  So we need that upgrade.

I think we should trade up to get Clady and done with the discussion.  And if I'm proven wrong next year, remember that no one actually pays me for my analysis.

What I wonder is how well the rest of our draft is going to be after the first pick.  The other nine picks will have more impact than the first one.

Rashard Mendenhall

I'm kinda getting the feeling he may be the best player at pick 13.  He would meet one of our needs-from the mouth of Foxy, and alot of people are high on him.  We shall see how it all shakes out.

jason taylor

So everyone thinks we should get a pass rusher, a power back and an OT.  I read that Parcells is willing to deal Jason Taylor for a pick somewhere between 26-47.  Well what do you think about getting Taylor in exchange for the 43rd pick.  I think that automatically makes us a top 5 defense, with possibly the best front four in football.  He would be good for two or three more years while Johnson gets up to speed.  The only way I argue against this is if Johnson is ready to start now, or we find a way to get Vernon Gholston.  We could essentially get a starting tackle in the 1st, Taylor in the 2nd, and Forte, Kevin Smith or Chris Johnson in the 3rd.

Don't be surprised if a back chosen in the 3rd rd or later ends up being the best back of this class over the next five years.  I'm not dogging the top three (Stewart, Mendenhall, McFadden), but none of them are clearly better than the rest the way Adrian Peterson was or Eric Dickerson when he was drafted, and later round guys who have the same physical ability but more desire may end up being better.

I'd take Taylor for #43

I think he's still got a couple Pro Bowl seasons left.

random thought

What if the Patriots trade up two spots to #5 and take Darren McFadden.  We saw how good Lawrence Maroney in the Superbowl - not very.  They keep from playing against him twice a year, and he would be a great fit with Brady, Moss and company.

If I was Bellichik, I'd do it, and the Chiefs wanna trade back, and they could still get Gholston at #7, and maybe an extra pick in later rounds or next year.

keeping pace

We need to make sure this draft is a homerun.  I know every team says that every year, but I always look at what our division foes are doing.  There's a good chance that we'll be facing Jeremy Shockey with the Saints and Lito Sheppard with the Bucs.  I don't want to see Michael "The Burner" Turner twice a year with Atlanta.
