Panthers SBN Mock Draft 2nd Round Pick: DT Dre Moore

My 2nd round pick in the SBN Mock draft being hosted by Mocking the Draft has been posted. I went with DT Dre Moore from Maryland with this pick as I'm sure some of you probably guessed I would. Though MTD's Matt Miller agrees with taking a DT with this pick he wasn't too enamored with the selection of Dre Moore:

The pick of Ryan Clady in round one filled an immediate need at left tackle, and Clady may end up being the best tackle in this class. This pick confuses me, though. I love replacing Kris Jenkins here, it's the move I would have made myself. Why Dre' Moore, though? Moore carries a solid third round grade from myself right now. He showed up out of shape for the Senior Bowl and was very unimpressive the entire week. Like most hyped defensive tackles, Moore is a boom or bust player to the extreme. His lack of production in big games is also another negative. Moore may be local, and he may be from Maryland too, but he's not a high second-round pick. Pat Sims of Auburn was the pick here, or perhaps Frank Okam. I know Carolina wants a pass rusher at tackle, so maybe wait until round three to make this selection and draft Chad Henne here.

Hey, if the Panthers could still get Moore in the 3rd round then I would be ecstatic. Matt obviously favors Pat Sims over Moore but most of the prospect rankings I've seen have Moore higher than Sims, including Mike Mayock whom I tend to trust a little more than anyone else (no offense to Matt). Matt has certainly been doing this longer than I and so if he says Pat Sims is better than Dre Moore then he could be right.

I'm not crazy about the thought of taking Chad Henne here. I like Henne but as I've posted many times here I don't think the Panthers are in the market for a QB. They may pull the trigger on Matt Ryan if he falls but in the end all that talk could be a smoke screen.

I hadn't really considered Frank Okam so I reviewed Matt's profile on Okam and he sounds pretty good. He is a definite possibility.

So Matt Miller flamed me pretty good and graded my pick a D. Let me know how you would grade it.

Poll
I would give the Dre Moore pick a grade of:
C - Right position but Moore is a reach
15 votes
D - Wrong position and Moore is a reach
3 votes
F - Wrong position and Moore will be a bust
5 votes
A - Right position, right person
10 votes
B - Wrong position but Moore is a good pick
3 votes

the same

I think I would've graded you a C.  But keep in mind that my experience is none, so I'm no authority on the matter.  I just think our 2nd rd pick should go for a guy who may make an impact right away.  I don't think Moore could unseat Kemo or Lewis.  That's the entire basis for my grade.  I think Chad Henne would've been a waste of a pick, and he'll never be better than Tim Rattay or Gus Frerotte.  Maybe there is a speedy TE available, a competitive DE, or a speedy skill guy at RB, KR, or DB.

You got a 'D', huh?

Didn't this guy give you a 'C' on Clady as the first pick? "Doesn't fill a need" or some such thing, and now he says it "Fills an immediate need"? I dunno, this Matt guy may be a true genius when it comes to the draft, but he hasn't said much that made sense to me regarding the team I follow closely.

Ya know, the only position we never discussed much for this pick was FS. There was one guy left on the board with a 2nd round grade, and that's my boy (in that we both went to the same school) DaJuan Morgan from NC State. Any thoughts?

I like Morgan

He always played well against Ga Tech...I wouldn't mind if we snagged him in the 3rd round though. Actually even if we picked him here I wouldn't mind. It is a position of need as I don't think Holt is a long term solution. We need to groom a starter.

I haven't talked about a safety because I'm still feeling burned from last season. Fox doesn't value the position enough to use an early pick on it. Maybe he will surprise me this year.

no surprises

I think that our defense played pretty well for the most part last year and Holt makes us better.  We had a losing record because of our offense.  I think those are the reasons why Fox isn't looking for a safety, even though I'd be alright with drafting Kenny Griffin and maybe a Sam Baker early in the second.  There's no guarantee that any good OTs will be left in the 2nd, though.

Matt Ryan

I just read in the NFL Truth and Rumors on cnnsi.com that Jerry Richardson is very high on Matt Ryan and that the Panthers might pick him.  For now, we're going to assume that is just a rumor and completely untrue, but I might be looking for more similar news in upcoming days.  I doubt he'll prove better than Delhomme, Romo, Matt Moore or Kurt Warner, all undrafted free agents.

McNair is retiring...

so there is no chance Ryan drops past the Ravens. The Panthers would have to trade up for him and I don't see the Panthers trading up for Ryan. Golston or one of the DT's maybe.

good

Good.  I don't Ryan.  I didn't know McNair was retiring, though.  I bet if they draft Ryan, Kyle Boller starts playing like they expected him to years ago.
