Panthers Get Pro Bowl Snub: Fan Poll
Though I’m not happy with a total of ZERO Panthers making the Pro Bowl I can’t really identify a Panther who deserved to go. I believe Steve Smith is a Pro Bowl level player but he hasn’t had the season or the stats.
Kris Jenkins has played well but not good enough. Let’s not even talk about Peppers. Who else? In my opinion the Panthers best player has been Jon Beason but with Patrick Willis being drafted first he will never get the attention Willis does. Chris Harris has a team record 8 forced fumbles but still not PB level in coverage.
Carolina isn’t alone in getting shut out of the Pro Bowl, Jacksonville didn’t get one and Tampa Bay garnered only one.
That’s ok though because this Saturday night we can show the NFL nation this collection of non-Pro Bowl players can beat a team with 8 Pro Bowl players. Things are developing in the Panthers favor and the Cowboys may be ripe for a letdown. If the Panthers can recapture some of that fire and enthusiasm from last week the home fans may have something to cheer about.
Go Panthers.

I'd say Steve Smith. He's done more or less all he can. Who's ever going to gain over 1,000 receiving yards when David Carr's throwing to them for over a quarter of the season?! (A couple of expansive games and he still might sneak it, which would be a phenomenal effort given the state of the Panthers' season).
If his performance against the Texans was closer to the Pro Bowl vote cut off he'd probably have gone, that was one of the best performances by any WR this year. I've not seen a more impressive TD than the one where he escaped the bunch of tacklers on a short pass and went the whole way.
But the Pro Bowl votes go to players from winning teams first and foremost, so fair enough.

My vote would be for Smith
He's the only PB caliber player on the squad this year. You can make a case for Beason but as I said he will always be going against Willis and his higher draft position and the gaudy numbers.

the pro bowl
The pro bowl is too much of a popularity contest and TV has too much to do with it. The greatest snub of all-time is that London Fletcher has never made it because he's never on TV. He's one of the league leaders every season in tackles, and this year he compliments that with 12 PD, 3 INTs and 1 TD. I don't know how Marion Barber got in. He's a beast, but he's part time.
Oh! You wanted me to talk about Panthers. Well I think Jenkins should have made it, but maybe voters are making up for his appearance last year that was not earned, even though he was clearly better this year. Beason won't always be overshadowed by Willis. He surprised a lot of people, but Willis had a better season. Willis started from the beginning. Beason was a holdout who played part-time OLB until Morgan got hurt. If he didn't hold out and started the season, he would have had 20 more tackles than Willis. He had 13 tackles in the first three games. Morgan got hurt and he's had 105 tackles in 11 games, about 10 tackles a game. He's an incredible player and trading down to get him was the best draft move we've made in a couple years. He and Richard Marshall are our best defenders on a consistent basis. DeAngelo Williams would have made the Pro Bowl if he had 232 carries, which is what Foster has. At 4.9 yards a carry (the same as Marion Barber), he would have had 1090 yards. However, Foster has those carries for less than 900 yds. We all know Smith is a dominant receiver. Last year T.O. had a couple bad games and he remarked, "I'm not the one pulling the trigger." The same is true about Smith. We upgrade at QB (Jake and Moore next season) and we've got another dominant season out of Smith. However, Moore to Smith is gonna look good in the next two weeks and people will remember how great he is.
I really don't understand how the Pro Bowl rosters are set with two weeks left. I think Steven Jackson should have gone instead of Barber, and I think he'll prove it in the next two weeks.

the link
The link you provided in this article is one by Jim Trotter that states one of the most idiotic things I've ever read. He states that coaches love nothing more than when the Pro Bowl rosters come out so he can use the snubs to motivate players. How absurd is that? If a player needs that for motivation, he doesn't deserve to go. If a coach needs that to motivate his players, I guarantee his team has a losing record. Look at Jon Gruden. No Bucs made it. Obviously he's found other ways to motivate his team prior to this week.
I think as a coach, it's easier to congratulate a player than to motivate him. He also says Fred Taylor, David Garrard, Derek Anderson and Jeff Garcia should have gone in. I can understand those arguments, but his motivation argument is dumb.

I agree
If you truly were snubbed then you probably don't need this type of motivation. You already play at a high level without the motivation of a snub. It is a dumb point and I'll bet some players would take offense to it and possibly demotivate them.

post season awards and next year
Speaking of post-season awards, does anyone know if Tim Tebow is going pro? I don't see a reason for him to return to college. If he does go pro and is available when we pick, should we take him in the draft? I say definitely yes, and I would trade up to get him. The past few games have demonstrated that we are talented enough to win games against decent teams. Obviously we aren't too good without a top tier QB. With Jake, I think our preseason predictions of 10-12 wins would've happened as we may still get 7-8 wins with subpar QB play. Our current starter has NEVER thrown a TD in the pros. We wouldn't need Tebow to play for a couple seasons as Jake is still young (compared to Favre and Vinny) and quite competent. I think we have every other position figured out personnel wise, we just need more consistent play. We could also get a good safety and OL in later rounds. If we can't get Tebow, OL needs to be our first pick. You know your season is over when you're talking about the draft before Christmas.

Really?
"I think we have every other position figured out personnel wise, we just need more consistent play"
What about a genuine #2 WR? Someone to push Steve Smith and take the heat off him. Doesn't seem the Panthers have one at the mo, unless you're confident in Jarrett stepping up?

sorry for the confusion
When I say we have the other positions figured out, I mean we know who can do a decent job. I think Jarrett will step up as a solid #2, but he'll never be a Keyshawn or Moose. He'll just be good enough, along with Drew Carter, for us to not draft another receiver for a couple years on the 1st day. I can see Jarrett catching 60+ passes a year for a long time, but he won't be a pro bowler or a serious threat, just pretty good. However, if I had my way, we would've grabbed someone else. What do you guys think about Antonio Bryant? He would be a good #2, I think. I just want Tebow on the team. And maybe we take that QB from Appalachian State on the second day of the draft. He ran for over 300 yds, and completed 14 of 18 for 160+ yds and two more TDs in the semi-final, and then had over 300 yds and three more TDs in the I-AA championship game. That's right...he performed well in the playoffs, unlike BCS babies.

Tebow is a Sophomore
He can't come out until after his Junior year. Sorry but you'll have to wait another year

what i heard
I hear you have to be three years removed from high school to go pro. It's kind of confusing. The rule should be removed now that we've determined Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams are garbage. So I guess based on that, Tebow has to wait. Based on that, we should get the best OL available. Again, I'm talking draft because the playoffs starts in two weeks, and we ain't going.

Guh-wha?
So I guess that, out of necessity, my vote belongs Gross, but I want you to know my heart belongs Harris.
by r3 on Dec 19, 2007 4:41 PM EST 0 recs
Yeah, I should have included Harris - oversight
I mentioned him in the write up but forgot to include him in the list. I also meant to put a "none" option in there but forgot that too.

i disagree
I disagree that Harris deserved a PB nod. He got some players injured and caused some fumbles, but that's it. Compared to other players, he did great, but I distinctly remember Joey Harrington and Matt Schaub looking like All Pros against us. We won't even talk about what Peyton Manning did to us since he does that to everyone. I do think Harris is a good player, though, and we need that toughness/attitude on our defense.
