Panthers vs. Packers: Game Plan Predictions

The Offense

This just might be the week Jeff Davidson changes up the offensive game plan. With Vinny Testaverde starting the Panthers may open the game with short passes to TE Jeff King and WR Steve Smith. The Packers will try to jam Smith at the line like everyone else lately and play a safety over the top. Instead they should try to go deep to Carter early if he’s matched up one-on-one. The Panthers must pick their spots to run the ball but trying to run it down their throat is not advised. I would like to see DeAngelo Williams touch the ball more on passes in the flat and screens. If Vinny can get rid of the ball quickly the Panthers may be able to move the ball. If he has to sit in the pocket for long we may see the Panthers punting repeatedly. The key to the game is obviously protecting Vinny Testaverde and hoping he can hit is receivers.

The Defense

The Panther secondary is going to have its hands full as Wr James Jones and Greg Jennings are going to stretch the field repeatedly. Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble are going to need help from Deke Cooper so let’s see if he is up to the task. The new starting running back RB Ryan Grant doesn’t scare me too much so I don’t expect too many blitzes from the Panthers. The Panthers will hope the front four can get pressure though we have not been effective pressuring the QB this season. The Panthers have been vulnerable in the middle of the field so Jon Beason will have to keep an eye on TE Donald Lee who is having a good year. The key to the game will be the play of the SS Chris Harris and FS Deke Cooper. We have to hope Favre has a bad game and throws a few picks.

Special Teams

The best we can hope for is they don’t give up the ball in the return game or allow any long run backs. I know its asking a lot but it’s the best I can hope for.

If the Panthers can force a few turnovers and protect the ball themselves they just may be able to stay in this game. The Packers should be suspect for a let down and may be overlooking the Panthers given the upcoming match-ups with Detroit and Dallas. The Panthers have to be feeling the lack of respect being given them. Lets hope the Panthers can find some motivation in there and pull the upset.
