Panthers Preseason & Training Camp
Football Outsiders 2010 Almanac: Panthers Offensive Strategic Tendencies
FO has released their 2010 Almanac and they were kind enough to provide CSR a copy to evaluate. You can purchase a copy by following this link. I thought the 2010 season recap was pretty well stated but nothing I want to rehash yet again. What I did find interesting and in many cases reinforced many of our notions about last year's offense. See Table 1 below with my comments in italics:

- The Panthers ran the ball more than any other team in the first half (50% of plays); to protect their young QBs I imagine.
- The Panthers had the league's worst DVOA on RB runs from single-back sets (-25.3%) and the biggest difference between runs with one back (3.7 ypc) and runs with two backs (4.7 ypc). It was the second straight year that the Panthers ran much better with multiple backs in the game. I blame injuries to the offensive line for this downward trend. Getting Otak back will improve the performance of the single back sets.
- Carolina ran more often on second-and-long than any team except for Kansas City - but they were terrible at it, gaining 4.05 yards per carry with -39.1% DVOA. This was a huge drop from previous seasons; the Panthers averaged 5.52 yards per carry running on second-and-long in 2009. John Fox loves to run on 2nd and long and it led to an increase in 3rd and longs.
- Carolina's offense was second in the league in the number of passes thrown away due to pressure. I think we've beat this
horsepickle enough already.
So what differences will be see in these ranking in 2011 with Rob Chudzinski piloting the ship? We will discuss after the jump...
CSR Blogger Live from Panthers Training Camp, Tues Aug 9
Unfortunately last night was a wash (literally) when the storm came through. The Panthers practice for today was moved to 10:30 this morning, so I'll head down for my last practice shortly.
CSR Blogger Live from Carolina Panthers Training Camp: Mon Aug 8
I'm heading down the my next to last camp for this year. As usual I'll post updates and of course feel free to use this post to discuss all things training camp for the evening.
How is Cam coming along?
At this point we've had a good amount of time to see Cam Newton wearing the red 'no hit' jersey running both the second, and first team offenses for the Carolina Panthers in training camp. In less than a week we'll get to see him under live fire from the New York Giants in the first preseason game. While some dismiss preseason football as pointless folly, I'm definitely in the camp that believes it can be an extremely important predictor for a team's future success (or lack thereof).
We'll have ample discussion about the Giants game throughout the week, but today I thought we'd focus on Cam Newton (surprise) to get a feeling for how he's been doing in training camp and where he is based on what we saw at Auburn, and at the NFL combine. If you haven't done so already, I strongly suggest you watch the six minute video of Cam found here in Kris Mynatt's post. It will help you get a good sense for what I'm going to talk about today.
In short, Cam Newton is a project. There are still many areas where his game needs to be polished, but he's looking much better than we saw prior to the draft. Though there are some suspect areas in his mechanics, he is a lot further along than I expected him to be at this point. The pure fact alone that he and Jimmy are trading off in camp for who looks better supports the idea that Cam is as NFL ready as anyone at the position at this point.
If you want the 'long version' of Cam's breakdown, including more in depth analysis you can find it after the jump.

You know the drill. I'll post my observations as they practice.
A few additional notes:
Despite what Derek Anderson said about coming in to compete, it quite evident he's not going to get that chance. He didn't take a snap yesterday and one would think if he would compete he would have taken some on his first day of eligible practice.
Jimmy Clausen still love the dump off pass, seemingly wanting to avoid mistakes in making him look better. I would say Clausen plays not to lose, Cam is playing to win.
Although DeAngelo Williams only has one practice this season under this belt, all three of our running backs have played well. It's exciting to see them all performing at this level, however, one has to question is our offensive live and running back that good or is our defense just that bad (or rather that far behind).
CSR Blogger Reports from Panthers Training Camp, Thurs, Aug 4
I'm heading back down to training camp this evening. I should be able to provide a little more commentary this evening. Tonight is the first night everyone can practice and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where we are when everyone is on the field.

An Early Panthers Camp 2-Deep Depth Chart
Joe Person psoted on Charlotte.com the Panthers two-deep depth chart, with one change. I think he has the back-up tackles in the wrong spot. Just as we discussed on the radio show last night we will look at the surprise developments on several positions
The Panthers two-deep depth chart:
OFFENSE
QB – Cam Newton/Jimmy Clausen
TB – DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart
FB – Tony Fiammetta/Ben Hartsock - Indicates the Panthers will only keep one FB
WR – Steve Smith/Armanti Edwards - Will Edwards run in the slot?
WR – David Gettis/Brandon LaFell - Speed over size
TE – Jeremy Shockey/Greg Olsen
LT – Jordan Gross/Lee Ziemba Garry Williams
LG – Travelle Wharton/Zack Williams
C – Ryan Kalil/Mackenzy Bernadeau - MacBern has to get better at snapping the ball to stick here
RG – Geoff Schwartz/Duke Robinson - Robinson getting his last shot?
RT – Jeff Otah/Garry Williams Lee Ziemba - I definitely prefer the rook at RT
Defense & ST...after the jump...
