Sidney Rice returns to the Seahawks

Rice broke the news himself on Twitter. Per a league source, it’s a one-year deal. We’re told the deal pays more than the veteran minimum, but the specific amount isn’t currently known.

Gettleman believes odds of re-signing Greg Hardy 2 long-term deal are better now that 2014 FA market has settled & future NFL cap $$ clearer— Alex Marvez (@alexmarvez) March 26, 2014

Panthers GM Dave Gettleman believes the team is more likely to reach a long-term agreement with franchise player Greg Hardy now that free agency has died down. Speaking in a Tuesday radio interview, Gettleman also touted the fact that the Panthers now have a better idea of their future cap commitments. The earlier the sides agree to a deal, the better for the Panthers, who would surely love to reduce Hardy's cap number as they go bargain hunting in free agency. Hardy can bide his time, however. The sides have until July 15 to reach an accord.

ESPN's Ed Werder stated on SportsCenter Thursday that free agent Jerricho Cotchery is "close to a decision," and is "right now leaning" toward signing with the Panthers. Cotchery turns 32 in June, but would at least give Carolina's receiver corps some credibility. The Panthers are currently bereft of NFL receiving experience. Much more interestingly, Werder stated he believes the Panthers have already "internally" discussed trying to trade for DeSean Jackson, and "might entertain the idea" if the Eagles' draft-pick asking price is reasonable.

Cam Newton to have foot surgery!

Adam Sheffner on ESPN ... "Cam Newton to have foot surgery" to repair an injury from the Panthers last game against the 49ers during the playoffs. The Panthers and Newton decided to ahead and have the surgery since taking it easy hadn't diminished the pain. This surgery will have a 4 month recovery time, which brings him right to the start of training camp.

Would love to see him as a late rounder as a guy who can return kicks and a pass catcher out of back field/slot with tons of speed

Da Kraken doesn't care about your disrespect...

"If you don't stop me, I'm going to break your quarterback's face," Hardy said. "... That's just people talking. Naysayers, people jabbing, even old analysts and old players talking about a game that they're too slow to play. Congrats to them. That's what they get paid for."

Hardy should be a Panther in 2014

Greg Hardy - DL - Panthers Impending free agent RE Greg Hardy said he's not opposed to the franchise tag. Hardy is coming off back-to-back monster seasons for the Panthers, racking up 120 tackles and 26 sacks over the past two campaigns. He's also said he would be willing to give the Panthers a hometown discount on a long-term deal. The bottom line is that Hardy will not be leaving Carolina. There's no chance. A year after grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 6 4-3 defensive end, Hardy checked in at the No. 3 spot in 2013. Hardy also dominates against the run. Source: Steve Reed on Twitter

Armond Smith odd man out

Armond Smith - RB - Free Agent Panthers waived RB Armond Smith. Carolina officially activated Jonathan Stewart (ankles) from short-term I.R. Saturday. Smith is the odd man out in the backfield. He stood out in the 2012 preseason (4.3 YPC) but has rushed for just seven yards on ten real carries.

How DET Goes 9-7 while 8-8 Panthers Miss Playoffs.

I'm smelling an 8-8 finish for the Panthers. We are tied at No. 6 in the NFC with DET and CHI at 4-3, but hold the tiebreaker over both teams. The Panthers could go 8-8, while CHI fades and DET goes 9-7 to jump us in the playoff hunt. Likely CAR Losses (2): @SF, NE, @NO 50/50 Chance (2W/2L): @ATL, @MIA, NO, NYJ Likely CAR Wins (2): ATL, TB This puts us at 8-8. DET will fade with Cutler out and three tough upcoming games: @GB, DET, BAL. DET has an interesting sched. They should beat CHI, TB, MIN and lose to GB. That puts them at 7-4 with five weird games left. The rest of their sched consists of shaky veteran teams who can either be great, good, or horrible on any given Sunday: DAL, @PIT, @PHI, BAL, NYG. If DET goes 2-3 here, they finish at 9-7, one game up on CAR. I know who I'm rooting against on Thanksgiving Day.
