Playing Devil's Advocate

Now, I want to get this out first: I think we can make the playoffs and I am only trying to put out the possibilities that would prevent us from doing so, because they are not talked about much here and I'd like to discuss them.

#1. What if our guys can't stay healthy? Beason's injury is not an easy injury, it is a bad one. He will not be 100%, so what if he gets re-aggravates the injury? Than we lose our all-pro MLB. Luke Kuechly than comes in to play MLB, which means more snaps for Thomas Davis, which means more chances of him getting hurt, which would surprise no one. Than we lose our start WLB as well. Who will our starting linebackers be? James Anderson, Luke Kuechly, and Jason Phillips or Jordan Senn. Than there is Otah, who, like Davis, would surprise no one if he got hurt. We'd have Bruce Campbell or Gary Williams starting at right tackle with Otah down.

Panther's Bizarro 2012 Season

At the beginning of last season very few suspected that Cam Newton and the Panther's offense would have the kind of production that they did. After enduring the excruciating 2011 offense masterminded by Jeff Davidson, and led by Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen, us Panther fans could have only dreamed about the offensive output that Chud and Cam delivered. Conversely, the 2011 defense was expected to be able to hold it's own and keep us in games while Cam developed and the offense gelled.

Wow, was this wrong! Due to injuries on defense, Chudzinski's handling of the offensive scheme, and Newton's accelerated development, the offense shined while the defense sputtered.

In the 2012 season we all have expectations of what we think will happen based on what we saw last year, as well as what moves were made in the off-season. But what if we really have no idea? What if what we think is going to happen is turned upside down? What if the defense dominates while the offense struggles? Crazy you say? Le'ts look at the how it may happen in the Panther's bizzaro 2012 season.

First Look: Camp Battles in the Making

Ah, summer time... The draft is done. Free Agency is practically over. The days are long and the sun is sweltering. Or at least it will be come July and August in the upstate when the Carolina Panthers head into training camp. Last I saw reported, we had at least 90 people on the roster and only a chosen few (53 to be exact) will make it to the team. Even now though , I can see the makings of some extremely tough camp battles that are just going to come up from the numbers.

Let's take a look...

The Future of #23

1iag6yOk, call me Dr. Frankenstein, cause I'm about to put some life back into this dead horse!

Sherrod Martin is just one of the players that have been heavily beleaguered for mediocre play in the last few years. The safety position is incredibly underappreciated for the amount of responsibility required to play it. The safety position is truly the "safety net" of the defense. It is the last line of defense and that is why the position is so difficult. For a player to become proficient at this position, he must be a threat against the passing attack and against the rushing attack. Run defense has been the biggest knock against Sherrod Martin, more specifically his tackling ability. In pass coverage however, Sherrod has performed very well. In his three years in the Panther’s secondary, Sherrod Martin has picked off seven passes. That is good enough to tie him with shut down corner Chris Gamble during the same length of time.

My question to you CSR faithful is, "why did we move Martin to safety?" He has the build of a cornerback, he has experience at cornerback and he is not a strong tackler like most cornerbacks. I would be really interested to know why the FO or the coaching staff decided to move him out of his position. In my search for this answer, I first looked at his draft stock. (These are all combine numbers)

40 Yd. Time

4.43 sec.

20 Yd. Shuttle

3.98 sec.

Height 6´1

Vert. Jump

36´´

3 Cone Drill

6.60 sec.

Weight 198

Bench Press

12 reps.

Broad Jump

10´03´´

Number 23 put up some respectable numbers at the combine. The next part of our breakdown will be to check out his stats. During his four year career at Troy, Martin collected nine interceptions, 138 solo tackles, and 4 sacks. Not bad for a defensive back.

The final evidence that Martin should be moved back to cornerback is not through stats, but through a comparison to another player: Stephon Gilmore. It is scary how similar these players are. Just look at these numbers from the combine.

40 Yd. Time

4.40 sec.

20 Yd. Shuttle

3.94 sec.

Height 6´1

Vert. Jump

36´´

3 Cone Drill

6.61 sec.

Weight 190

Bench Press

15 reps.

Broad Jump

10´03´´

Even there stats are similar! At South Carolina, Gilmore totaled seven interception, 148 solo tackles and seven sacks.

So I'll let Y'all decide!

All-time NFL mock draft on MtD

Then head on over to Mocking the Draft and sign up. The NFL season is over three months from starting anyway, so I thought this would be a good/fun way to kill some time. If you're interested, sign up. There are still five spots available. Okay, technically there are six, but I'll be taking the last spot that's not taken by all the other competitors, so it's really five. Here's the link if you're interested:

CSR OT Open Thread, Vol. 13

It's a couple of days late, but here's this week's OT thread so we can have our non-Panthers discussions.

As usual, here's a refresher course of the rules:

This is the place where you can talk about almost anything you want, and we prefer you start any off-topic conversations here to help keep the front page articles focused on the Panthers (after all, this is a Panthers site).

Please keep in mind that while this is an "open thread", the rules of CSR still apply. Play nice with each other, don't bring up politics and/or religion, and don't post NSFW images or use words that you wouldn't say in front of your mother. (Ok...we'll be lenient on the language...but let's try to keep the F-bombs to a minimum.)

Feel free to use this space as your "community cafe" so to speak, where you can discuss movies, music, tv shows, food, or anything else you want to discuss, so long as it adheres to the rules.

Very Important Note: If you are going to post images in this thread, keep them clean*. We've had issues with this recently, and we don't want to start enforcing a no images rule. Don't be "that guy" and ruin it for everyone else. Also, if you post an image, please post a subject line with it so people can hide images if they feel the need to do so. Failure to comply with this request will result in your image being removed, regardless of what the image depicts. I don't have the time nor the desire to beg everyone to use a subject line when posting images, so I will just remove the images that don't meet this simple criterion.

Also, please try to keep images to a reasonable size. This is more of a request than a requirement, but it is somewhat annoying to go through a thread with a lot of images that take up the entire screen. I understand that in some cases it's necessary for the image to be larger due to details that can't be seen in a scale version, but there's no reason to post a 1000 x 4000 image just for the sake of posting it. Please be considerate of others and use the height tag when appropriate. If you don't know how to use height tags when posting images, you can consult this How-To Guide.

* - By clean, I mean don't post an image you wouldn't find on Google Image Search with the Moderate setting activated. I think you all understand what I mean, but I'm posting this here just for clarification and to prevent anyone from saying "I didn't know what he meant." In lawyer-speak, it's called "Covering Your Arse", or CYA for short.

And finally, please be sure to rec this thread so it stays near the top of the fanpost section to ensure everyone who wants to join in can easily locate it. Also, if you rec'd the previous open thread, it would be awesome of you to go back and un-rec it so it disappears from the top of the fanpost section.

Okay Panthers fans, this is now an off-topic open thread!

Similiarities Between Panthers 2003 SB Season and the Upcoming 2012 Season

Hello all. This is my first time posting a fanpost so hopefully I do everything right. Ok so let me start off by saying I was never a football fan until about 2003. My first football game I've ever watched and really paid attention to was Super Bowl 37 between the Bucs and the Raiders. So after watching that, I was excited for the next season to come. I live in Chicago so by default I thought i'd like the Bears. But the season came and they were playing pretty bad, if I remember correctly. Then, week 2 I believe it was, I remember watching highlights and they show the Panthers blocking all those kicks against the defending Super Bowl champs (Bucs) to get a crazy win. From then on, I kept my eye on Carolina, as i was somewhat of a fan the rest of the season. Then came the divisional playoff game, and when Jake hit Steve on that post in double overtime, I fell in love with this team.

So a year or two goes by, then I purchased one of those NFL Films movies that was about the Panthers 2003 season. So a few weeks ago, I remembered that I had that dvd. I decided to put it in and relive that magical season. Somewhere early on in the film, a ref is talking to John Fox about the offense. Fox said something along the lines of "yea well we upgraded the defense last year, this year it's time for the offense".

Can David Gettis Successfully Return from His ACL Injury?

David Gettis is one of the most intriguing wide receivers on the Panthers roster. During his rookie year in 2010, Gettis flashed a lot of potential catching passes from Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, Brian St. Pierre and Tony Pike. Despite playing with this rotating group of quarterbacks in a conservative, ground and pound "Foxball" offense, Gettis still managed to finish second on the team with 508 yards and 3 touchdown catches, averaging 13.7 yards per catch. He also finished seventh among rookies in receiving yards, despite being a sixth round draft pick. In a season where the Panthers finished 2-14, there's no doubt Gettis was one of the few bright spots for the team.

After his impressive rookie year, many of us here at CSR were eager to see what he could do with our newly drafted quarterback Cam Newton, who had the ability to throw the ball deep very well. With Newton's cannon arm throwing deep to Gettis (4.39 40-time), I was very excited to see what Gettis could show us in his second year.

When the lockout ended last offseason, it was reported that Gettis showed up out of shape to training camp. However, he quickly got back into shape and managed to impress Coach Ron Rivera, who said "[he] had a good last few days and has a bright future in this league". Unfortunately, impress is all he would be able to do last season, as Gettis tore his ACL when attempting to run a route and was declared out for the season shortly afterwards.

So far this offseason, Gettis has remained relatively quiet, as we haven't heard too much news other than the fact that he felt "93 percent" in an interview with Panthers.com, and expects to be fully ready for OTA's.

The one question which has bugged my mind along with many others at CSR this offseason is if David Gettis will be able to successfully return this season, and if so, how much of an impact he will have in our offense. To answer my own question, I decided to take a quick look at a small sample of other wide receivers who suffered ACL injuries and how they performed upon their return to the field.

2013 is the year to draft a NT, 9 of the top 22 DT's are NT's

WalterFootball.com is posting their 2013 draft rankings, and they just got to the DT's tonight (I'll post the link at the end, they still have the LB's and DB's to go). Talk about NT's, it looks like the 2013 draft is loaded with them, 9 out the 22 of the 22 DT's they list are NT's, and only 3 are underclassmen. Here are the NT's on the list.

1. NT Star Lotulelei (6-4, 325) of Utah, runs a 5.15-40, and they project him as a top 10 pick.

2. NT Johnathan Hankins (6-4, 325) a junior at Ohio St., runs a 5.18-40, and projected as a top 20 pick.

3. DT Kawann Short (6-3, 310) of Purdue, runs a 5.05-40, and projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick.

4. DT Bwnnie Logan (6-3, 287) a junior at LSU, runs a 4.95-40, and is projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick.

5. NT Jessie Williams (6-4, 320) of Alabama, is from Australia, runs a 5.35-40, and is projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

6. NT Johnath Jenkins (6-3, 351) is a junior at Georgia, who started ahead of NT Kwame Geathers in 2011, runs a 5.5-40, and is projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

7. NT Sylvester Williams (6-3, 320) of UNC, runs a 5.19-40, and is projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

10. NT Kwame Geathers (6-6, 350) of Georgia, runs a 5.55-40, and is projected as a 3rd or 4th round pick.

15. NT Mister Cobble (6-0, 332) of Kentucky, runs a 5.35-40, and is projected as a 4th or 5th round pick.

21. NT T. J. Barnes (6-7, 333) of Georgia Tech, runs a 5.45-40, and projected as a 7th round pick, or as a UDFA.

22. NT Montori Hughes (6-4, 327) of Tennessee-Martin (he transfered from UT), runs a 5.35-40, projected as a UDFA.

Perhaps it's bad luck for the Panthers, but other than the NT's (the Panthers now have 4 NT's), it looks like the 2013 draft is very thin at DT. Additionally, the draft seems very thin at DE as well, with around 2/3rds of them likely being 3-4 OLB's.
