I find myself very relieved to hear that. But I do still have something to worry about. That being whether a long term deal will ever get done.
Source: Kawann Short will report to Carolina Panthers training camp | The Charlotte Observer
The belief is the Panthers are looking for a contract that will pay Short around $15 million a year. But that would fall $2 million short of the average salary per year for Fletcher Cox, who just inked a six-year extension worth $102.6 million with the Eagles last month. In four years, Cox has amassed 22 sacks, including 9 1/2 last season for Philadelphia. Short, in three years, has totaled 16 sacks. Short’s 11 sacks in 2016 were the most in franchise history by a defensive tackle.
So the Panthers are around $2M per season shy of the recent rate? Damn that sounds familiar. Let me make a prediction. Short plays out the final season of his contract for $1M and some change and in the process gets peeved about it enough to refuse to play under a franchise tag. Seriously,,,let's hope that doesn't happen.
Well kudos to Short for pulling that option off the table. He's going to be a very rich man, either this year or the next barring something very unfortunate [knock on wood].
As far as Gettleman we are to believe that he's dug in now and 'doesn't negotiate during the season'.
"We don’t know for sure if the salary cap is going to keep skyrocketing. We have to be fiscally responsible," Gettleman told the Observer last month after minicamp. "There’s a point in time where I have to stop at a certain point and say, OK, again, I have to do what’s in the best interest of the Carolina Panthers. That’s just the way it is."
Well up until this past draft I thought Gettleman never drafts for need either, but he sure broke the hell out of that rule didn't he? I can change up at any point if the situation warrants it. Maybe once TC starts and then the preseason the pressure subsides a bit as well focus on the season at hand. Maybe then something will get done. Crap why can't they meet in the middle at $16M per season. That's $15M more than he's schedule to make and you can't get the season back, contract wise.
