Injuries are part of the game, today the Carolina Panthers were reminded of that. On a simple crossing route with little to no contact, Stephen Hill extended to catch a pass from Cam Newton an landed awkwardly on his right leg. His screams of pain turned an high energy practice silent before the receiver was helped to his feet by the trainers and carted off the field.
This is an extremely saddening turn of events for Stephen Hill, just days after a small run in with the law. It's amazing how a player with so much potential can so quickly risk his spot on a roster due to poor decisions, then possibly lose it all together because of injury. Hill entered training camp as a slight enigma with high expectations. A former second round pick with fantastic measurable and a forgettable two seasons with the Jets, some believe Hill could turn the page under the tutelage of wide receiver coach Ricky Proehl. If Hill managed to become a respectful and functional 3rd receiver he could have been the final piece to completing a solid, if not scary receiving core. Now that opportunity may be lost all together.
It is too early to know exactly what type of injury Hill suffered and to what degree, but early indications are not good. He was carted off the field under the watchful eye of General Manager Dave Gettleman and will be examined by team physicians. Early speculation is an ACL tear or other major injury to Stephen's right knee. This is a cold reminder that injuries can change the course of a season in a split second. While I have great faith in the Panthers depth this season, I still believe injuries will play the largest factor in the success of the Carolina Panthers. If the Panthers plan on competing in the post season, they must stay healthy
Wide Receiver Coach Ricky Proehl gave a few comments to the media about Hill's injury.
"He’s a great kid. He’s done nothing but work his tail off since Day One. For a guy to be drafted in the second round, come to us and be on the practice squad – he checked his ego at the door and did nothing but learn our offense, work his tail off, give our defense a great look all year. I just told him, ‘Your opportunity’s going to come, just keep working.' He did everything I asked him to do, and I hurt for him, I really do."
Our Hearts and Prayers go out to Stephen Hill. The entire Panthers' community is hopeful for either a minor injury or a speedy recovery. Sorry Stephen, and good luck. Panther Nation is behind you, #Keep Pounding.
