With both the Seahawks and Patriots adding backup quarterbacks recently, John Clayton runs down the list of the most reliable No. 2s in the league.
So here are a few of the back-ups better than the Panthers Derek Anderson:
2. Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles Surprised? You shouldn't be. The case for Sanchez is two-fold: He has averaged 22.4 points per game as a starter, and has a 37-33 career record. In Chip Kelly's offense, he's averaged 30 points per game.
Yes I was surprised. Maybe Clayton overlooked Anderson altogether and will issue one of those 'My bad' statements tomorrow? If not, he should.
6. Mike Glennon, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Glennon, who now finds himself sitting behind Jameis Winston, has averaged 19.9 points per game in his two NFL seasons -- and that's with very little supporting cast of note.
Somehow the back-up to the starter Anderson beat twice last season (Josh McCown) is somehow better than Anderson? I guess you could argue McCown was never starter quality last season. Kind of like the Panthers hoping Byron Bell could be a LT.
Think this list couldn't dis Anderson any worse? Guess again.
9. Matt Moore, Miami Dolphins He's thrown just 29 passes in the three seasons since Ryan Tannehill arrived, but he went 6-6 as a starter in 2011, which is part of the reason the Dolphins re-signed him to a one-year deal this offseason.
Never mind the Panthers jettisoned Moore in favor of Anderson four seasons ago. Apparently going 6-6 four seasons is better than 2-0 last season?
Clayton is usually a little better than this. I honestly think he's going to do a Homer Simpson and update the list with Anderson in the top 2 or 3. Otherwise I just can't understand what Clayton was thinking.
