The two tackles are likely day three draft prospects at a position we expect the Panthers to stock up on.
Panthers OL Coach Works Out Trio of Sooners - Carolina - Scout
According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Carolina Panthers’ offensive line coach John Matsko was in Norman, OK working out three former Sooners on Tuesday. The team’s starting offensive tackle Daryl Williams and Tyrus Thompson as well as starting left guard Adam Shead all spent some time with the Panthers’ coach. These three players played a big part in helping the Sooners’ rushing attack finish 11th in the country with 3395 rushing yards and finish fifth in average yards per carry (6.10 yards). Williams and Thompson are both big bodied tackles, standing 6’5" and over 325 pounds, who can be road graders for the Panthers running backs. If the Panthers front office hopes to address other positions early in the NFL Draft, the selection of Williams or Thompson would be great Day 3 selections to add depth to the offensive tackle position.
I like both of the tackles and would not be surprised to see the Panthers draft one of them. Williams is the higher rated prospect but seems better suited for the right side.
Daryl Williams Draft Profile – NFL.com
BOTTOM LINE Williams is a competitive player with all the football character you want and NFL power to match. When he gets defenders lined up in his sweet spot, he can drive them out of the play. Winning with guile and toughness over skill, Williams' lack of functional athleticism is a concern and might be a catalyst for a move inside to guard.
Thompson is more athletic and has the skills to play left tackle many scouts question is desire and consistency to handle the Pro game.
Tyrus Thompson Draft Profile – NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON King DunlapBOTTOM LINE Thompson has NFL size and flashes NFL potential, but he doesn't play with the consistency or effort that NFL scouts want to see from him. There will be teams that drop his grade due to football character, but tackles that have traits and upside usually get drafted earlier than their draft grades call for.
I could see the Panthers taking a gamble on either player with a late round choice on Day 3.
