The Week In Review:
- The NFL this week has been crazy, from Ray Rice's video, to Roger Goodell possibly being fired, to Adrian Peterson being arrested and for us, Greg Hardy's case finally drawing national attention (funny how a month or two months or three months ago it wasn't a big deal). While I won't get into any of this mess, all I know is that the Panthers are letting the Hardy trial play out - and that cocaine is one hell of a drug.
- Cam Newton has been practicing all week long and will "Absolutely" start this weekend. Don't expect him to be 100 percent, but his presence will be felt against a weak Lions secondary.
- The bad news for the Panthers, is that Deangelo Williams is nursing an injury and is questionable. This could also be seen as good news however, as Stewart could be seen as the primary back, and a glimpse of what could be our future in Fozzy could be shown as well. Regardless, our backfield is so deep with Cam at the helm and Tolbert at the fullback position, even if Stewart AND Williams was out, I wouldn't sweat it against the Lions.
The X's and O's:
The Panthers are coming into the second week of the regular season with a 1-0 undefeated record; a rare sight for the Panthers. The Lions are coming off a win at home against the Giants in which offensively, they torched the Giants defense with their passing attack. A week ago it was "The Panthers have no receivers", this week however, it's "Cam Newton will have a great day playing with his new weapons on offense". We should torch Detroit offensively if Cam gets it clicking, and I could see this game turning out like the Vikings game of last year for us offensively in which we put up 30 points. Defensively, we need to stop Megatron. Reggie Bush is good, but more of a receiving back than a running back, and no matter the difference, our run D is too good to be torched. If we are going to win this game, we must stop Stafford and his passing attack.
The X Factor:
This weeks X Factor will be the Panthers front four. If they can get enough pressure alone without any blitzes, that will help our "below average" secondary with pass coverage by forcing our linebackers back into the secondary to help them out in coverage.
Autobot vs. Decipticon Key Matchup:
My Autobot vs. Decipticon key matchup will be between Megatron and Melvin White. One of the leagues top WR's against an UDFA CB who has taken a long road to the NFL will be a fun one, but could also be a painful one. I believe Melvin will do the job well enough to get us the win, and will limit Megatron to only a few catches for not to many yards. There will be times where he will be doubled, and when that's the case, the other defensive backs need to keep eye on Golden Tate - Staffords second favorite weapon.
Prediction:
I predict the Panthers will come away with a victory in a contest that won't be as close as people expect. Our offense will click and our defense will bring their A game in our home opener. Detroit better hope it doesn't rain either, otherwise this game will be all ours. 27-10, Panthers over the Lions.
